Help? UCs, Ivies, CA schools, Shanghai U, etc. chance back for advice.

I'm soon to be a senior in high school and am very lost. Was wondering if you guys could pass along some feedback. Here are my condensed stats:

Class of 2010, Income < $25000

GPA: 4.0 uw
Class Rank: 1/~550

SAT I:
800 Writing
770 Critical Reading
700 Math

SAT II:
800 Chinese <-- took this before i realized its uselessness, i shouldn't submit this anywhere at all under any circumstances right?
680 Math II
(retaking sat i and math ii to boost scores, along with sat physics and bio x])

AP Stuff:
World History 5
English Lang 5
Calculus AB 5
Physics B 4
Taking: Calc BC, English Lit, Spanish, Bio, Env Sci

3 years varsity tennis
1 year math club, held officer position
3 years CSF
2 years MUN
3 Years Key Club
(^ I have also lost in elections this year in all three clubs T_T)
founder and president of Guitar Club
Played in a band for 4 years, performed ~30-40 shows
placed in guitar competition held at local college
job at local tutoring place
occasional private tutoring jobs

my quarter-finalized college list, each school under the category that i think it should be:

Safety:
UC Davis
UC San Diego

Match:
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
UC Los Angeles
UC Berkeley
USC

Reaches:
John Hopkins
Brown
Cornell
Harvey Mudd

For giggles:
Princeton
Dartmouth
Harvard
Stanford
(and my cousin wants me to apply to Shanghai University O.o)

Anything I should look out for or improve upon? Retake SAT? Am I correct in the categorization of my schools? Should I avoid the more prestigious schools due to my weak extracurricular activities? I would appreciate any feedback at all. Thanks guys!

bumpitybumpbump

You have a pretty good chance. I wouldn’t say cornell is out of your grasp, i know they allow quite a stretch for marks. I know someone with 1960 who got in. Your grades are really good, try some extra curriculars.

trust me, this guy who got into cornell, he didn’t have that great of extra curriculars, he just had great grades and they let him in. Plus your a minority, which helps. Heck, i’m applying to the top schools and my extracurriculars are horrible!! i’m just hoping my race, my good grades and my uniqueness to the student body lets me in.

i think your SAT grades are pretty good, i think if you took them again, you may slip in some (just based on statistics)

Good luck, and please chance me back!

You won’t get into those top colleges. Your matches would be cal poly and the low end UCs. There are many people with way better apps than you noob! Can someone please give me an amen?!

You have a good shot at all the UCs, especially if you’re a CA resident which I assume you are. Take some more SAT IIs and see how you do. The CalStates will definitely be safeties for you. You have a chance at Cornell, Harvey Mudd, JHU, and Brown if you write good essays and get good recs. The others are obviously reaches for anyone and everyone; your ECs for those skills will be weaker than other applicants’. I am not sure how Shanghai U does admissions.

why in the world would you try for shanghai U!!! :open_mouth: don’t listen to your cousin…

you have a good shot at all of those, I think. I doubt ECs are what CCers make of it.

Shanghai University is the way to go. Compared to Princeton, SU has a much better campus and air quality. Also there is roast duck whereas no Ivies have mastered the centuries old technique to slow-percolate such a grand bird.

The four "for giggles schools, along with Brown and Harvey Mudd, will be very difficult because of the EC weakness. However, good to great chances at the rest of your schools!
