Hey guys,
So recently I have been accepted into ucsb. I am currently a human biology major at UCSC doing premed with a 3.65 GPA. I am a consistent volunteer with a high leadership position in my fraternity. I am looking for research and clinical experience at the moment. I am not sure which school I want to go to next. I know prestige doesn't matter at all for med school, so is my decision only based on which of the two schools I will be happier at?

UCSB. No doubt! Better academics and the social life is unrivaled.

Why do you want to transfer?

Wuddup mermaker! Haha.

I’m not sure either school has an abundance of medicine related opportunities since they both do not have an associated med school. Both areas are pretty isolated and have fewer opportunities than a large urban center. I would say maybe stay at UCSC and look into commuting to SF for clinical volunteering / internships / doctor shadowing. UCSB will probably have more undergrad research positions available because it’s larger, but I think clinical experience, doctor shadowing, and hospital volunteering are more important for med school, yes?

There are two big hospitals in Santa Barbara.

ha what’s up, man! Even though we have our own Facebook group, I’m still super active on here ha

UCSC’s human bio major guarantees you a internship. I don’t believe UCSB has anything like that. Transferring will burn any bridges you’ve made.

Yeah I’m really not sure what to do. I keep changing my mind

I am in the same boat mbalce, I like that a majority of SC classes are worth up to 5 units and can be fulltime with 3 classes, also can graduate faster/take less classes each quarter so you don’t overload yourself. While SB is 4 classes each quarter. I am taking that more into account that social scene, but still conflicted and need to visit to see which campus is more “me.”

If you’re more interested in doing research and less interested in going to medical school, I really do think SC might be better for you. Rankings aren’t super significant, but worldwide, it has been ranked 2nd in research influence by Times Higher Education. You should just consider that as one part, but from what I read about the program I’m going into (marine biology), they actually do a lot of hands-on training and you can gain a lot of experience working with professors (plus getting good recommendation letters) which you wouldn’t get elsewhere. They seem to be very big on supporting their undergrad students and helping them do well in grad school. For instance, that kid who discovered that sea lions could keep a beat is doing paid research and he is not much older than us (I assume you’re in your early 20’s or so like me). Also, if it carries any significance to you, most of the UCSC grad students I interned under here on Oahu have worked with NOAA and some even got grants from NSF to do their marine animal research here in Hawaii. Just something to consider, of course.

I am trying to go to medical school

UCSB, for sure!
look up the academics + campus
