UC Santa Barbara vs. Continuing Community College

Hi CC! Long time lurker, first time poster.

I wasn't going to post this thread if I got into UC Berkeley, but......here we go.

I've been going to a local college for about 2 years now and have done IGETC, the pre-reqs for my major, etc. I originally wanted to major in Psychology at UCB and applied to there and UCSB. I got into UCSB, but am now trying to decide on whether I should go or not.

I said that if I got into UCB that I was going to study Psych, and that if I didnt get in then I would have to choose between staying at my college or going to UCSB. I eventually want to go to Med school, but the reason I want to stay at the school I am at now is because I can take all the pre med science courses (Physics, Organic Chem, etc,) for A LOT cheaper than at a 4 year university.

So should I stay at my school and finish up my science courses or go to UCSB?

I really dont wanna go to UCSB, I just applied becasue my brother wanted to go there and I thought it would be cool to go to the same school. But UCSB doesnt have a good rep (at least from what I have heard).

I can give more info if needed. Thanks for any help.

UCSB does have a good rep, just not quite as much prestige as UCLA and UCB. UCSB is a very good school and many people love it. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that it’s a 3rd tier school or something. You will get an excellent education there.

That said, I am a firm believer that you shouldn’t force yourself to go ANYWHERE. If you don’t like the school, you shouldn’t go. Have you visited? Cal was last on my list…until I visited. Obviously, that changed my opinion right away. I would visit before you write it off. JMHO. Good luck.

I havent had the chance to visit yet, I want to, but I havent had the chance. Which is why I went by just hearsay.

But do you think it would be better to finish all my pre med courses at a CC or at UCSB? I mean going to a community college is going to be a lot cheaper, but I dont know if it is recommended.

Honestly, I really don’t think it matters. If you think that staying at CC is going to make you more competitive, I would do that. You should be happy with your Uni choice and it seems like you have no desire to go to UCSB. I still recommend visiting though.
