Hey everyone, I was accepted to the University of Rochester. My other choice is UConn (I was not admitted to the honors program).
I will be most likely majoring in Computer Science, although this can change.
Each college is offering me enough aid so the net price is roughly the same. Without loans, UConn would cost 25K, Rochester 24K. I am not entirely sure how much my parents will contribute.
However, I am a little uneasy commiting to Rochester due to the high sticker price, and how that net price increases every year, probably more that UConn. I am not sure whether my need based + scholarships will hold up. But I love Rochester a little bit more than UConn due to research opportunities and the smaller class sizes.
As a first-gen, this is all very confusing, so any advice would is welcome
Okay - lock in the costs first with your parents, so you can really compare the two. You say “without loans”…what loans are you talking about? Your parents are taking out loans? You can only borrow $5,500 the first year.
Figure each school will go up about 5-7% per year. Feel free to PM me if you need more help. Good luck!
Rochester is a better school for CS and meets full need, so you should expect your financial aid to go up also.
@STF4717 Both schools are offering me the Direct Subsidized + Unsubsidized Loans of $5500. The rest would have to be covered by Parent PLUS or private. Can Parent PLUS loans be transferred to myself after I graduate college?
I also forgot to mention that Rochester is also offering a work study of $4000.
If you feel they are even (or close) in terms of fit – academic, environment, social, cost – I suggest Rochester due primarily to better academics and smaller classes.
