Hey guys! Right now I'm deciding between Villanova and UDel Honors. I received a 29k merit scholarship from University of Delaware and I received some money from Villanova that would make it affordable. I would just have to do work study as well. My major is nursing. I have no idea which one to choose because they will both cost me around the same. Well Villanova would be a little more expensive but only like 2k more. Which one should I choose? I know Villanova has a better nursing program and is more well known. However, I am worried about the stereotype about the kids being more preppy and snooty. Also which one seems to be more diverse. I also know my scholarship would not increase with Delaware with rising tuition costs. However, my financial aid can increase with Villanova, but I have heard that decreases over time as well. Ugh.

My daughter is going through the same decision right now, also for nursing! She is considering Villanova, Delaware, Rutgers and Scranton. She likes all for different reasons. We got some good advice on the the nursing major thread. She will have to do work study too.

Both are excellent choices. We like the nursing faculty we met at both places! The nursing students seemed happy and nice at all schools as well. Also, consider the college environment. Which do you like better (larger, smaller, public, Catholic, dorm situation)?

Tough choice! I think my daughter is close to picking Villanova, despite the higher cost, triples etc. She really loves the school.

Good luck!

I have been to a lot of colleges with all three of my kids. The 3 that I would love to see my DD go to are William & Mary, Naval Academy or Villanova. Why… They all appear to be very safe & the kids were really nice. Preppy & snooty were mentioned regarding Villanova. 1st. I really did not see that… Villanova is a very good school and college is what you make of it. You will find all types in all colleges. It is simple, if someone does not care for who you are there are other social constructions where you will fit.

In the end if all else fails run with your screen name and bake some brownies…that will get you some friends.

All the very best to you both in your final decisions. Enjoy college!!

My son just graduated from Villanova and I can safely say his years there were the best of his life so far (and he’s had a good life). It’s more than just a college, it’s a community led by Fr. Pete, who stresses commitment to fellow students and the bigger world. School spirit and community service are huge, and alumni support the undergrads with internships, guidance, mentoring, etc. My son was able to secure worthwhile internships in his field (business) all 3 summers and an excellent job upon graduation. Though a little shy in nature, he made dozens of friends through activities and service trips to help underprivileged children in the U.S. and S. America. He also was involved with the men’s basketball team, and attending games is another school unifier.

The nursing school is extremely highly regarded, as are engineering and business programs.

The surrounding area is also top-notch. You are a quick train ride from Philly, and the main line is a big attraction. Good restaurants and shopping are everywhere. I was almost as sad as he was this past weekend when he graduated, but as Fr. Pete said to the students, they can “always come home.”

I would cross Rutgers off the list, much as it pains me to say. That school isn’t what it used to be. UDel is a good choice for many, but I don’t think it has the same family vibe as Villanova.

I just completed my first year at the University of Delaware, so maybe I could help provide you with some insight. Although I was not in honors (and regret not applying), I had many friends who were and got to see how they lived. As a first-year honors student, you would be living in the brand-new Redding Hall, a dorm whose spacious rooms and lounges made my dorm look like it was part of Skid Row. Also as an honors student, you will receive many more perks not offered to regular students. Honors students are invited to attend special guest speakers on campus (U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor visited last semester), are granted priority scheduling for classes, and are assigned an actual professor to act as their academic adviser.

With that being said, I walked around Villanova’s campus last week as students were moving in for the summer session and found that it was relatively preppy in nature, comparable to Delaware. The only difference is that Greek Life is a huge part of how the social scene operates at UD which can be good or bad depending on whether or not you plan on rushing. If I were you, I would choose Villanova over UD. Definitely in a nicer community and apparently the nursing program is better there. If you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to PM me.

@sunny100 Its the business program. They’re literally pampered day and night. Free pizza, Free donuts, free pens and pencils. Everything is free for them and the classes are easy. Even CE and FMR are comparatively easy courses (a person I know was a bio major who switched to business). The nurses are also pretty well taken care of. Nice nursing building.

I think that can be said for business programs everywhere @MrInformed. Business majors at Delaware such as myself enjoy many of the same things you mentioned.
