Thanks guys! I appreciate the help! SoCalMusicMom, I haven’t got the chance to check out your list yet but I definately will this week. 27dreams, NYU has definately been an interest to me. I love how their program seems. The only minor problem for me is the price, but my Guidance Counselor told me not to worry about price, so I’ll continue my research on NYU. Honestmom, thank you for mentioning Drexel; its on my list already. And yes, their program is excellent.

The items next to them are the majors I am interested in at that particular college. The ones with (*) next to them means that there is no audition to get in (Also the colleges without anything next to the major or minor, for ex: #s 7, 15, etc). The colleges with(__) next to them indicate that there is an audition to get in. As of right now, i have a better chance of getting into a college without audition. If anyone has any experience with these colleges, thoughts, comments, or anything helpful, please tell me!!!

Hi Meshaboo.

First, the bandier program at Syracuse does not require an audition. My son applied there and we are waiting to hear from them.

Next, if you don’t play an instrument and can’t afford lesson, you really have to reconsider whether those programs requiring auditions should be on your list. However, head of the St Rose music department told us that should my son not pass the audition (we go next Saturday, March 19 and I do expect him to pass), one possibility is that if you can’t get into the music program, you can minor in music industry which requires no audition, then take applied music courses (basically lessons). After developing your skills, you can apply as a major and do your audition. But remember, a couple years of lessons won’t guarantee that you will be able to pass the audition. My son has been playing guitar for 6 years and has been taking lessons for 5 of those years. Even so, preparing for an auditions has required much work including extra lessons over the past few months.

Getting into a couple of specifics. I have my impressions of these programs and they may or may not be accurate. Also, I don’t know what your specific goals. I see schools like SUNY Fedonia and Ithaca as having a more classical orientation (they do not allow electric guitar for auditions). Drexel (which we are still waiting to hear from) is very selective, so you will need a hook to make them interested in you.

A general observation. You mentioned math as being your worst subject. Sound recording programs are going to be more math/engineering oriented than the industry programs. At places like Berklee and UMass Lowell, when my son mentioned he was interested in sound recording, everyone always says they are the “wicked” smart math guys. I would guess that is the same with places like SUNY Fredonia, Ithaca, and Hartford.

That’s it for specifics. I do suggest you visit the schools ASAP and have discussions with the students. First, just visiting the school and giving it the look test will be helpful. Next, students will give you the best feel for their respective programs. Also, it will give you a chance to more fully develop your goals which will further narrow your search.

Good luck.

Mesha, I went to #14 York College and they have a major for Music Industry and Recording technology. I am not sure if it requires an audition or not but I do know you have to play an instrument and preform something as part of it.

If you are looking as far South as Radford, you might also want to look at James Madison. JMU requires an instrumental audition. It has unbelievable facilities. Radford is a lot farther away than Harrisonburg.

I have a question to the original poster … what do you want to do with music industry and recording if you don’t play any instrument? Do you at least read music and/or sing on key? Since you are only 16 or 17, you still have time to sort this out further. If you get a chance as a senior in high school, you should try to take at least one serious music class (music theory is a good starting point). If your school doesn’t offer that, and you can’t afford to take private lessons, then you should consider joining the band or chorus. Try to sort this out a little deeper before you get your heart set on majoring in something associated with the music industry and recording, as you don’t want to get to college and realize that you don’t really like music theory or music classes that may be required for the major you choose. Good luck … you still have lots of time.

I applied to some of the same colleges that you are interested in. I was accepted to Syracuse (Bandier), Drexel, and waitlisted on Northeastern. I didn’t get into NYU. Originally, my heart was set on Music Journalism at NYU in the Recorded Music Program, but it was very selective (only about 10 students). Ultimately, I chose Bandier Program at Syracuse. I’m an incoming freshman, but already I love it. Our advisor emails us daily with Billboard and other music news (and its only summer, classes haven’t even started!).

The program is highly selective; it only accepts 25 students per year. I’ve connected with the other 24 students already on Facebook, so this program has a nice family vibe. I had great grades in high school, but not a good SAT score. I graduated rank 7th, 4.1 GPA, honors courses, numerous leadership positions, 27 ACT, and 1470 SAT. Although my SAT was horrible, I wrote a GREAT essay. Syracuse also requires 3 short answers on their Common App. In each short answer, I emphasized my love for music; greatly detailed my future goals and aspirations; and I wrote my vision for the perfect way to give back to the community using my love for music. I also do not play an instrument.

As a school, Syracuse is quite generous with helping you afford to attend. The college also holds numerous events nationwide so you can connect with other incoming students as well as speak with alumni, current students, and recent graduates. Once the school year begins, I can offer you more info if interested.

I’m soooo sorry to everyone for the long wait… I’ve been extremely busy since I created this. School and work is a pain in the neck!!!
I would also like to thank everyone that is helping me, you don’t know how much this means to me!
To Snowflake, thank you for the eye opening advice; I can read music a little bit…I know all the keys on the piano… I’m going to buy a music thoery book to learn more about it. I’m also very close to buying music production software to really see if music is my thing. (if someone can suggest software that would be absolutely extremely helpful!)
JHolloway, congradulations!!! You are very lucky And yes, please update me when you start.
I’m still trying to figure out if I want to major or minor in music industry. As of right now I see myself in that career, but Syracuse and College of St. Rose’s major requires and audition. I’m really looking into those schools but I won’t be able to do the major. The minor would be fine but I wouldn’t want to be accepted into the minor there and the major at another college. I have narrowed my list down to colleges with no audition but those are the only ones that I like that do need an audition…

University of New Haven
University of Hartford
Drexel University
Northeastern U
SUNY Oneonta
NYU
I just added Temple University for their B.A. Broadcasting, Telecommunications, and Mass Media, concentration in Media Production and/or concentration in Media Business Entrep… their Music school requires audition

Soooo… please comment! THANK YOU all again!!
P.S. I’m not only looking into music, I will be majoring in general business also.

Hey I just got accepted into the University of New Haven!!! :D

Meshaboo, Congratulations and I hope a big scholarship goes along with the acceptance!

Congrats, Meshaboo … you’re on your way!

Thank you very much Momofbassist!!! I got the acceptance e-mail, now I’m waiting for the acceptance package and hopefully a scholarship will come with that!

Congratulations! Looks like it is time to start this year’s acceptances thread :)

Nice!! My S is considering MT also, so I look forward to hearing how things go!

Guys I got a $7,500 scholarship! And once I send in my enrollment fee I’ll be getting more money yay!

Meshaboo,

Congratulations. I have just started the acceptance thread for this year and, had I noticed your acceptance posting earlier than today, yours would have been the first entry. To help me complete your information, can you tell me which of the several degree programs to which you were accepted by New Haven? Also, will you be studying a particular instrument or voice as part of that degree program?

Sure! I was accepted as a B.A. Music Industry major, and I would like to study piano and drums, if I am able to study two instruments. But piano will be the main instrument I’ll be studying

Meshaboo, Are you still considering SUNY Oneonta or any of the other schools on your list? I saw in another thread (if I read it correctly) that you have definitely decided on U of New Haven–so I’m wondering if you already ruled out the other schools and if so, why?
