I was admitted to Letters and science for berkeley (am planning on a chemistry or biology major), and I was wondering how I stand amongst the other berkeley admits...

My SAT isnt really high (2210 sat I and 800/800 for chem and math ii satII) and my GPA is high (4.0UW) only because I didnt take a lot of difficult classes for junior year (had one AP chemistry class my junior year). I love berkeley (visited the campus today and loved it) but the feeling i got from the students there is that berkeley is SUPER competitive and extremely difficult. I feel like i got into berkeley only because of my essay, and that i am behind everyone else academically. The people in my school who got into berkeley are all people who took a bunch of AP's junior and senior year, and got A's in all their classes, and have a bunch of awards/activities/leadership,etcetc.
Are all berkeley students like that?!
Do a lot of freshman students drop out their first year after realizing that they can't handle it? Are a lot of the classes filled with unusually smart geniuses? <--awkward wording...

What kinds of classes do freshman students in L&S take? (i'm nervous especially about writing/literature classes, because that is my weakness. XP) I found out recently that i am not admitted to any major in particular...

I also have regents at ucsd for biochem/cell bio (impacted major) and regents at davis as well... if that gives you an idea of what kind of student i am. XP

BTW, i'm not a premed. haha. even though I am planning on majoring something chemistry/biology related because i love chem and bio. I hope that the bio/chem classes arent too cut-throat with premeds...

I would love to go to berkeley, but I've heard stories of people dropping out because they can't handle the pressure, or people who end up having to study all the time just to maintain a decent gpa above 3.0... I want to go to a campus I like, but I want to make sure I can handle it as well.

The beginning of your second paragraph makes you sound like a ■■■■■. Are you serious?! You’re well prepared, and plus once you’ll start meeting people here, you’ll realize there are slackers and people whose ways of thinking are so freakishly simple you’ll wonder how they were accepted. We’re not that superhuman genius-y smart and hardworking (well, I’m not, along with most of my acquaintances).

You’re scores are above average. You’ll be fine. I initially came in and thought everyone would be super-smart and super-hard-working but its really not the case.

You will do well. Not everyone is smart or motivated. When you get here, you will meet some people who will make you wonder who forged their transcript. Your L&S advisor will tell you something about taking only 13 units your first semester. His/her advice does not apply to you.

Anyways, I don’t think this person is necessarily a ■■■■■. When I came here, I thought everyone was a genius and most people had at least a 2350 SAT etc etc… XD

I had the same experience as you I had an inferiority complex when I came in. But it’s not as bad as the rumours make it seem!

Everyone is going to tell you how difficult everything is and tell you to only take the easiest courses. But usually, if you work hard enough in ANY class, you’ll do well enough :)

Probably not a ■■■■■, but the OP definitely seems to be fishing for compliments.

OP: Use the brain that got you into CAL!!! You can definitely handle CAL if you work hard enough and are dedicated. I’m sure that many of those who end up dropping out are due to the fact that they didn’t try hard enough. With your high school record you obviously seem prepared.

wt eff u think a 2210 is LOW?? wow. i got an 1850 lmao (and got in). IM scared if I’LL survive. although ppl say SATs arent a measure of intellectuality…although i think it kinda is.

Wow… lol i’m surprised by the responses.
I honestly thought the standards at Cal were higher than this… Makes me kind of happy even if i’m being called a ■■■■■.

The reason behind my thinking is…my best friend who got a 2350 got rejected from Cal with really great stats… which is why I’m scared. So please understand. I had no idea 2210 was such a high score because in my overachieving school, 2210 is considered only slightly-better-than-average. I really struggled in my only AP class (chemistry) during junior year, while others seemed to breeze by in that class, in addition to taking other AP’s. Oh, and I thought the average SAT at Cal was close to 2300.

So I hope you understand why I asked this question, from my point of view.

I’m sorry if I offended anyone with my question! Even though I know Cal is a very competitive school, it seems more reachable now, and my perspective has definitely changed… a lot.

haha and I will definitely think more carefully about my questions in the future to avoid these kinds of responses.

The only places that have 2300-average SATs are certain scholarship receptions. A school like Harvard might have an average SAT of 2200 or so, so don’t worry about your score. CoE might be around that number, too. I think you’ll get well over a 3.0 provided you carefully study for exams and do your labs and homework, nothing new there.
