I began my BPF Scholars Program last year, as the application deadline was on January 29 of this year. At the time on the website, they didn’t have the direct online submission just yet, so I had to mail mine. But I followed up with one of the Directors and they told me that they received my application on January 13. They also said that notifications would go out in May. So every day, I would check the website, and now here we are in May. On their FB page on May 12, they said the the scholarship notifications had gone out by “email with letters to follow” (I had also asked them prior when the notifications would go out and how, and they said b May 16th by email.) So I anxiously waited and waited and I didn’t hear anything that Friday. Then I thought, well, wait for the 16th, that Monday, but then I heard nothing. I still haven’t received a letter, as I’ve been keeping an eye out, but they said that, yes, all notifications went out. I’m just really confused! And don’t get me wrong, The Border Patrol Foundation is very special organization for me and my family. Obviously it can be competitive with only a certain amount of funding, I’m just wondering what I should do because I know I can get pretty annoying, lol.
I’m confused. It sounds like you didn’t get a scholarship if all of the notifications went out and you didn’t get one.
Am I missing something?
@romanigypsyeyes That’s exactly it! If all the scholarship notifications went out, and I didn’t receive one, that’s fine, but I have no emails (I’ve been checking them like cray, and I’m pretty good about checking all my emails, including spam because I know emails can end up in there) or letters in the mail saying that I didn’t receive one. So I’m confused as well. I’m wondering it it’s because I mailed mine.
I applied for a lot of scholarships in high school. I don’t think any of them alerted me when I wasn’t selected- only when I won. Did they specifically say that non-winners would be notified?
It sounds like the organization doesn’t send out notices to those who didn’t receive an award.
I don’t know if that’s common or not. I don’t know if these sort of entities just send notifications to award winners. If so, then it may be safe to assume that you didn’t win an award.
Do you know how many applied and how many awards there are?
Hopefully others can chime in here…do entities like this always send out, “sorry letters”? or is it common that they only send letters to recipients?
@romanigypsyeyes I was thinking about that too, I thought that maybe the letter they would send would be the notification saying one wasn’t selected? This is their Facebook post from May 12:
“Scholarship notifications were made today via email with letters to follow! Applicants, check your emails!
Announcements of winners names will be made public after all notifications have been received. Congratulations to all of our winners! It was a VERY competitive year!”
@mom2collegekids BPF said this year they funded 15 scholarships, the scholarships range from $1,500 to $5,000. I’m not sure how many applied. I am very confused!
It sounds like they only alert the winners.
I was also thinking, I applied to the Vantage West Scholarship Program, and they said that they notify winners by phone and that other notifications go out by mail. Do you think that this could be one of the cases? I mean I guess it could depend on when they sent the letter as well.
It’s possible, but if they really did have a large number of applicants then the cost of sending out rejection letters can really add up.
Call them if you really want. They might be able to tell you over the phone whether or not you won- and they can definitely tell you whether or not non-winners will be notified.
Today on BPF’s Facebook they had photos of the winners. Since I received no email, no letter, and no request for a photo I got the idea. :-S
I’m pretty down about it, I got my hopes up wayyyy to high for this one.
Thank you everyone for your help on this.
So sorry to hear that.
Do you have other scholarships to afford college?
Hi @MYOS1634!! I acruelly recieved a phone call today from VanTage West Credit Union- I won a scholarship from their Vantage West Scholarship Program!! I am so excited and happy!!
Congrats! That is a small scholarship. ($1k), however. Have you come up with a viable plan to pay for college? That’s what everyone who has tried to offer you advice wants to know.
