Help with freshmen schedule!! (Econ Major)

So bookbagging has opened for Duke freshmen and thankfully, I’m in the first registration window for freshmen. I’m planning to major in economics. I’m thinking of taking Econ 201D, Chinese 101, Writing 101 (required), and I’m deciding between Stats 111/Sociology/Global Health 101 as my 4th choice.

Some of my concerns are

  1. I have math credit and economics credit (from passing ap calc ab, macro, and micro with a 5) so that allows me to skip Econ 101D to go straight in 201D. Should I use the credit? I heard that Econ 101 is a weed-out intro class so that’s why I’m leaning towards using my ap credit. However, does Econ 101 build a strong foundation for 201 that AP Macro/Micro doesn’t include? I wouldn’t want to go straight in 201D and be a bit lost if there are major concepts in Econ 101 that I never learned in AP. Would I be fine going into 201D without taking 101D?

  2. Would taking Stats 111 and Econ at the same time be very difficult? Some students have told me that math at Duke is extremely hard so should I opt for a more less demanding class such as sociology or global health?
----if you do think I should take an easier class, would you recommend sociology or global health or a different topic?

  3. This is more of a personal preference question but would you rather have classes back-to-back or with an hour or two in between each class?

  1. Skip 101. You will regret it if you don't. Nothing in Econ 101 prepares you for intermediate theory classes.
  2. perfectly doable. Get the math requirements out of the way asap.
  3. Back to back

Second MBVLoveless.

  1. DO NOT TAKE 101.
  2. Stats 111 isn't "hard" per say, but requires time. Pretty tough to solve the p-sets (homework) without attending all the office hours.
  3. Depends on the location and time of day.
