Trying to create a solid list of 10 schools to pursue Acting/Theatre near NYC or LA. Interested in film, so would like a theatre program in which he could connect with film students, as well. Male, 3.8 with AP and honors classes, 2010 SAT, lots of extra curricular in the arts: improv, accapella, musicals/dramas. The list thus far is:
Chapman
Loyola Marymount
NYU
Emerson (in Boston)
Western CT State University
Any suggestions to create a well-rounded and safe list?
What are you looking for in a school? The more info you give us, the more helpful we can be. But two I might add right away are Boston university, and Pace in NYC. You also need to make sure you have a non audition safety (that you would be willing to attend)
USC. UCLA.
Check out CalArts and USC in California. Both schools have film students who work with student actors. LMU is great too and Chapman has a world class film school and they are building a new performing arts complex. If you are going to look at audition programs you may want to add a few more to your list due to the competitive nature of these programs, and as @toowonderful pointed out, make sure you have some non-audition safeties.
Drew University in New Jersey…very close to NYC and with your stats you will get some amazing merit scholarships.
Pace?
UNCSA has a lot of student films. You’ve got a lot of the most important ones listed Pace has the new BFA for Film TV, Emerson of course. BU has a great acting and film production program. NYU does a ton of Student films to keep you on camera. USC, UCLA, Loyola and Chapman are key on the west coast. So you have a great list here.
Thanks! How about schools on the East Coast that have strong connections with LA? For example, I heard that Emerson has a campus location in LA and a semester option there and that BU offers some sort of post degree program in LA?
Syracuse has Sorkin week. Aaron Sorkin (an alum) takes a group of seniors (all expenses paid!) to LA for a week for meetings/introductions/etc. seems like an incredible opportunity
Pace has a major that is specific to TV, film, and commercial acting and is in NYC.
NYU has an acting studio dedicated to film acting (Stonestreet). BUT- it is an advanced studio, not a primary studio- so would only be available after 2 years of training.
California State University Northridge
Here’s the info on BU’s post-grad LA internship:

Also I would suggest looking into Wesleyan (in CT, very close to NYC) as they have a great theatre/film program.
