<p>The x+y is pretty much there just to trip you up ^^ Keep in mind that (x+y)/2 is another way for saying the average of the two numbers. Look at the spacing, and you'll find that x and answer choice E are each 4 ticks from the average. As for the justification to why x+y is less than y, x is negative. Got it?
