Help with sat question of the day

Wynton Marsalis emerged as one of the great

trumpeters of the late twentieth century, winning

Grammy awards for both his jazz and even

classical works. No error

The error is clearly "and even" because of parrellism and idiom error, but why is C "winning" correct? Present progressives either refers to something that is an ongoing action or refers to future(silver turtles guide). He won the awards in the past, so isnt it in the wrong tense?

Thane for your help :)

I’m not 100% sure that this is the grammatical reason, but I believe that the gerund here contains an implicit “by”

You would not say:He emerged as one of the great trumpeters of the late twentieth century, by won Grammy awards - instead you would say that he emerged by winning. However, because there is a comma the use of “by” would be awkward.

Yeah maybe so, thane for the quick reply
