Son is applying to SCS. He's not certain who to ask for teacher recommendations. Carnegie's admission website says only 1 is required. S didn't have a particularly good experience with his math teacher last year ( although he did very well). Same could be said for Chem. The teachers who know him the best and have had him for 3 or more years are band, japanese and computer science. His CS teacher has offered to write him a glowing one and the other 2 would probably too. He is a field commander in band so the band director could write about his leadership abailities. Should he ask the CS and band teachers? Would 3 be too many? Will not having a math or science teacher write one have a negative effect on his app?

Applying to SCS? I see nothing wrong with having the computer science teacher. I think either band or Japanese could work.

My recs were from a Chinese teacher and Computer Science teacher. I don't think recommendations are weighed too heavily though, so not having a math won't make that much of a difference especially if you have a CS teacher.

My 'science/math' recommendation came from a statistics teacher, which isn't really all that math-y and I fared just fine; I also think my supplemental rec (from an econ teacher, or maybe us history) never even got there.
