Help with the app

Er, this is sort of random. But could you help me anyways?

To do the Columbia app I'm using Adobe Acrobat Professional on my mom's computer, which is Mac OS X 10.4.8. I rarely (if ever) use Acrobat, and if I do, it's only to read them, not to write on them. Plus, my computer is pretty old, so I all I have there is an old trial version of regular Acrobat, which means that I pretty much have no idea how to use Professional.
Anyways, my problem is that I have NO IDEA how to type on the application. I've gone to adobe help, looked through all the menus, gone on common app tech support, etc. etc., and haven't been able to find anything. I've tried exporting the application to MS word, but that just screws everything up on the actual application. So, I've just been adding all my essay drafts and such as attachments. However, I know I must eventually find out how to write on the actual application. The closest thing I can find to this is to add text boxes (under the "Comments" section of the toolbar). Is this the best thing to do? Is there another way to write on the actual application without text boxes?

I'm really sorry if you guys think it's inappropriate to ask for tech help on a college forum, but I didn't know where else to look, and I was wondering if anyone else was having the same problem with their application.

Are you not able to access teh application purely over the internet this year, without the use of some side application like Adobe?

The online app is not in pdf format. What you must be looking at is the printable form of the paper app.

They prefer it completed online.
