Don’t forget about travel costs. These can REALLY add up. We just moved our son about 23 hours away. Between airfare, hotels, etc we spent well over $1000 just on move-in. Then there is summer storage, flights back and forth for breaks, etc. We just had to ship him something he forgot and it cost us $90! Many of these small schools are in remote locations so travel costs can be even higher as you have to Uber them for 2 hours or fly to a regional airport which can be big bucks. Even campus shuttles to/from the airport can be pricey. Just something to keep in mind.
Yes! This is very true. We have had three go to east coast schools so far and it is expensive - no thanksgivings at home! But the experience of leaving California has been really good for them. Thank you for the reminder, though, it needs to be considered.
UC’s offer TAG (Transfer Guarantee Admission) to 6 campuses which are UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC Santa Cruz, UC Davis, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara. Some majors such as Engineering/CS are excluded at all but UCM/UCR.
For TAG, if the applicant meets the GPA and transfer course requirements, they are guaranteed a spot at their choice campus.
Several 2022 applicants which did not get into their preferred UC campus this admission cycle, opted to do the CC to UC transfer route. If students come in with a good amount of AP or DE credit, it is possible to transfer within 1 year vs. the normal 2 years.
TAG is a great option as a backup.
If you scroll down to Attachment C (page 7 and 8), it gives the boundaries of what is considered the local service area for CSUs in LA County.
This is great to have as a back up plan - thank you for including all the details!
Maybe worth adding in, that TAG is a great to have but not limiting either. A few of D19’s classmates transferred to Berkeley and UCLA (no TAG program in place ) from CCs too. My understanding is that they did complete TAG requirements for particular UCs but applied more widely as well. Worth mentioning maybe that all the Cal admits she knows went to CC in the East Bay, I think local helps as apparently there is outreach/cooperation. Gumbymom may correct me if any of this understanding is wrong.

Also, if she stays in the state, she may be eligible for Cal grants, and/or what used to be called the Middle Class Scholarship/ Blue and Gold Scholarships from the State of California’s Student Aid Commission.

You can go online and, your daughter can speak with the financial aid counselor, at her school to find out when they’ll be submitting her grades to the California Student Aid Commission with your permission. It is almost automatic and the high school submits it, but sends you a letter before they do that. Ask.
Good Luck!
If your kids prep for standardized tests and your kids are good test takers, you might consider having your younger kids prep for the PSAT. There are several schools that give significant aid to National Merit Finalists.
Yes, she has a freshman brother who I’ve decided will prep earlier, thanks for the tip!
