Hi,

I applied to five UK unis a short time ago. However, I made a stupid mistake and forgot to check if the essay for the UCAS was different than the essay that I wrote for my American schools. Should I contact the universities and ask if I can send them a different essay? If I'm not able to, is there any chance I'll be accepted? Most of the UK schools I applied to are slightly above average for my grades, with a couple exception that are right about my level. Thank you for the help.

In Europe, generally spoken your grades count.

Your essay is meant to prove that besides having the grades, you also have an interest in the subject you are applying for.

So the uk essay would be mostly expressing your passion for the subject and why you would be dedicated to it.
It should not be focused on a university as all of your UCAS schools receive it.

Depending on what your essay is like, I would just leave it at that or if it is really not appropriate, call and ask ;)

sorry, OP. you probably don’t want to hear this but…

The UCAS essay is supposed to be very different from your US essay. The UCAS essay is supposed to basically describe why you want to study the courses you applied for while VERY BRIEFLY including a few ECs. it also has a 4000 character/47 line (whichever comes first) limit. the essay, while it’s not a very important part of the app, is a significant part nonetheless (and the better schools you apply to, the more they count).

there isn’t really any reason to contact UK schools now to tell them about your mistake. I mean, you can try. but I doubt it will help. most likely, the UK schools will see you as being unprepared, and shrug it off.

given that you didn’t really write an actual personal statement, chances are you’ll be rejected from the UK schools. sorry :(
