Help with university choice !

Yeah, woebegone, i was just about to mention that...but i thought maybe you already knew that Zimmerman was a guy....

it's so funny how one quickly assumes genders until one is proved right/wrong. but i think it's possible to hear the voice of the gender thru the post!

Introduce myself? Great ! I never introduce myself in the forum before because i thought nobody would care. Frankly speaking, I never expect to receive so many advices and encouragement.. thanks everyone.

I am Zimmerman ( not my real name, but Bob Dylan is my favourite u see), 18, male, Singaporean and currently studying in a local polytechnic. One thing about me is that I tend to like things like others wouldn't.. I don't like to see and judge things like everyone esle. LOL, nobody of my age will listen to bob dylan, and there are very few singaporeans around who want to do a liberal arts education ( most of them will think that it is useless, cant help ur career) , but i really think that it is useful.

As a polytechnic student, I have access to lesser opportunities, almost zero chances of scholarships and admissions to local universities. People see us as dumber to junior colleges students, even though we score the same results for O levels. Although Im in a unfavourable environment, I still strive and fight very hard for myself. My dream is to study overseas, preferably a good liberal arts college in US. It will be the saddest day of my life if i enter a local university (they sucked... even though with the stringent admission requirements. They sticked with rote learning... Face it singaporeans) I wanted to major in economics. For career, I wanted to be a successful entrepreneur who have enough funds to contribute back to the society.( A scholarship fund for polytechnic students, have a college library or faculty named after me...lol )

My policy of life is " I don't not want to vanish/ die from this world without leaving a trace. I want people to remember me as a person and all my contributions. "

Lol, market myself? Yea.. Im looking to improve my writing skills... Sometimes I face a difficulty of having a good idea, but don't know how to express on paper.

your chances are bright! just tell your story in your way. i had some "weird" experiences in life, and i was scared, but i just put everything down, your voice will always speak through...of course, several notable events may have taken place, but show only those that reveal your personality and how it has developed. another thing is, there were very many challenges i also faced, but i didn't go out of my way to show how i overcame them....just try to achieve the perfect balance.

i know people in my country who enter College in USA after 1 or 2 yrs of university. i myself have spent 2yrs out of sec. school before finally making it to Williams [also got into wes and conncoll with aid]. [our school-leaving exam is somewhere in between o- and a-level.] my grades were far from perfect and i self-studied for a-level the following year after graduation [with only an "A" and a "B" and a "U" to show for it]...so that's just a little part of my story. there's more. but i'm sure that may just give you some hope.

your best attribute will be your passion/thirst for a solid education. i so much stressed that.

zimmerman i hate to be negative, but its the dragon year and a lot of dragon babies from singapore are gonna be applying at the same time as you are. as you would know, many singaporeans are now opening up to LACs, so perhaps competition would be rife. in any case, good luck :)

remember polytechnic is 3 years and JC is 2 years? Plus national service dude... so called national service...

What is the SATS requirements for international students like me? I mean how much i have to score? Anyone who got into LACS care to list your school and your SATS score?

thanks

I believe a score range of 2200+ is considered competitive everywhere.. A score of more than 600 in the CR would waive the toefl requirement for internationals in most schools..
