Help!

I am finishing my Sophomore year at Utah State University and and JUST NOW finally decided that I want to go to Med School. I know I'm behind the ball but I have been reading the forums but just have a few questions for myself. Any advice would help:

1.) I did terrible my freshman year (like 2.0) and redid everything and now have a 3.6. Will it effect my chances of getting in if they see such a bad freshman year?

2.) If I end up with a 3.4 overall and get around a 30 on the MCAT, it sounds like my chances to get into A typical med school would be fine. Is that true?

3.) I have my associates and headed into Exercise Science Major. Is that a bad choice for a major or does that not really matter aslong as you do good at the science and pre-req classes?

4.) Last question, Is it true that they look at your science GPA more that your cumulative GPA and if so, what's the lowest they'll even consider for science GPA? 3.0?

Thanks for all your help, any advice I will gladly take

You have to remember that while your university may not count original classes after retakes, medical schools will. So if you got a D (1.0) and then a B (3.0) in a class, your university might count that as a 3.0 but medical schools will count it as a 2.0. So your GPA might be a lot lower than you think.

Exercise Science, like other specialized health science majors, is a bad one. You want to aim for a traditional liberal arts degree meant for academic study – e.g. biology, chemistry, English, history, whatever.

A 3.4/30 is in medium-poor shape, but not terrible.

*

Can you clarify.

What exactly did you take freshman year; what grades did you get per class; how many credits were each class; and what did you take this year and those grades/credits.

It sounds like since you retook the same classes, that you’re almost still a freshman and nearly a sophomore. Or, am I misunderstanding?

To lessen the negative impact of your low grades, you need to take some extra 'non pre req" classes…maybe a few over the summer. If you take 6 credits over the summer (again, non pre-reqs), get A’s, that will help boost your GPA. If you do this over this summer and next summer, you can add 12 additional credits of A’s to help your GPA.

You really want to hit that 3.5 mark (at least!) if you can.
