I wanted to ask you guys about what to do in my situation -

I am a very average student (10th CBSE - 8.4 and 11th CBSE - 74%). I am a US Citizen studying in India, so naturally I would want to go abroad for my higher studies. My parents can't afford more than 15-20K Dollars a year for my education. (Right after I'll be graduating College, my sister will enter college).
I was wondering what is the best option for me. I was thinking community college and then switching out, but what do you guys think I should do?

If you have or your parents have residency status in one of the States, you will be eligible as In-State Student in the colleges in that State and that definitely should meet your budget for college fee.

I’m not sure. he pays taxes and all, but we don’t own a house anywhere in the US.

If your parents pay taxe in US you are an In-state student. So why don"t you read up on any one of the school’s guidelines in the state that applies to you.

You can get federal grants. You may still be considered Out of state, but you will have a plethora of funding available to you. it is hard to say what route you want to go, what major are you thinking of? Are you planning to stay with family? Have you taken the SAT?
Do you have family here? Going to community college …you would need to be a commuter…so if you have uncles/aunts here, maybe you can stay with them and take classes in the local community college. That will give you an idea of what you want to do and get used to life in the US.

@anialways - Is it really that simple? I heard that there’s a whole list of things that tell if you’re a resident or not.

@fall2016parent - I am thinking of aerospace or physics. yeah, my family is going to move there, and yes, i have taken the sat. I do have loads of uncles and aunts in the US. I’ve lived in the US for 14 years, so I know how it is, I just wanted to know about what are my options.

Hey I never said it is simple. All I said if your parents are taxpayers in US, then you need to check the in-state guidelines with a college in the State that is relevant to your family as a taxpayer.

Following is an example, might help you clarify your understanding as to where you stand in the scheme of things.
