Funding for international students

Hey,
So I was applied this year (class of 2018) and was accepted to US colleges. I am from India and I took a gap year after doing the IB. I was wondering if I could get any advice on funding options?

I want to fund as much of my education on my own as possible since I have a younger brother who might be applying around the same time as I finish my degree. I want to reduce the strain on my family if possible. My 12th result was not anything great (38/45) along with SAT I (1950 approx) since I was slightly distracted due to personal issues. My SAT II was better (English lit 800, Bio 750, Math 700).

I have been looking for scholarships open to international students but have not really managed to find any. So if any of you could point me in the direction of any that you are aware of that would be great. Also, if you know of any alternative financing options that would be welcome too.

Thanks!

The best aid is offered by the colleges and universities themselves. If you neglected to apply for aid when you applied for admission, then you should take a second gap year and apply to a new list of places that are more likely to be affordable for your family.

@happymomof1‌ sorry I forgot to mention this but I did apply for aid and got it too. I am trying to still reduce the amount I need to pay if possible. Thanks though :)

It is always helpful to include ALL of the info in your first post!

If you received aid from your college, then the only other place to look is within your country. Are there any scholarships awarded to students who wish to go to college in other countries?

You will have to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover all of your expenses for college in order to get a visa to study here. Do you have those funds?

If not, I hope you have an affordable option in India.

If the aid you got is need based aid and your family is supposed to pay the rest, then if you got outside merit money, your school might reduce their aid…and you’d be in the same spot.

This student is going to Denison…or at least that is what other posts indicate. The school does not guarantee to meet full need. If I were a betting person, I would bet he/she got a modest merit award from the school. But I’m just guessing.

Hey everyone.
Thanks for all your opinions. I’ll make sure to check with the college about it reducing the aid if I get external scholarships. A major part of my aid is a scholarship which cannot be reduced. This with work and book grants and stuff comes up to the amount we requested on our forms. So I guess it would cut into the work if at all.

Yes I do have the funds in the bank for the visa. But again, as I said earlier I want to put as little strain on my parents as possible. I have been looking for sources in India but unfortunately haven’t found any yet.
