My mother didn't file her taxes because she doesnt have enough money to do so but i really want to go to college and need the financial aid… i dont know what to do.

Do you mean your mother owes money with her return and can’t afford to pay it, can’t afford to take it somewhere to be prepared or what? Have you filed fafsa with estimated income numbers? Are you applying to any colleges that require CSS profile or their own finaid form in addition to fafsa?

Yes, my mother owes money with her return and cant afford to pay it. No I havent, i wasnt sure and didnt want to guess because were dealing with the government. None of my colleges require the CSS profile.

Well, she will have to pay by April 15 to avoid penalties and interest. She can file now and pay later. The only problem with that is if your fafsa is selected for verification. The fafsa irs data retrieval tool and tax return transcripts to satisfy verification won’t be available until a week or so after she pays or well into May, whichever comes first.

I would recommend you file fafsa now with the numbers from the tax return but you need to leave the status as ‘will file’ until she actually files. You should find out if your fafsa is been selected for verification.

Are you an entering freshman in the fall?

yes i am.
Can i use my sister returns because she has beensupporting myself and my mother. She has been claiming me for the past two years I’m 17 going on 18 in march.

Your tax filing status has NOTHING to do with your FAFSA status. Unless your sister is your appointed guardian, your mom’s information will need to be provided for financial aid purposes. It does NOT matter who claims you on their taxes.

Claiming on taxes isn’t relevant for fafsa. It has to be a parent and it has to be the parent with whom you’ve lived most in the 12 months preceding filing fafsa. Is your mother that low income? Does she even have to file a return? We’re getting a little beyond my expertise here but you may have to report your sister’s support on fafsa. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me will join in this thread, especially kelsmom who is a finaid officer.

Thank you so much, for everything. I wish I didn’t have to worry about these kinds of things, especially things I don’t have control over. Yes my mother is low income. She had to stop working due to family issues so we didnt make much. Thank you once again.

If your mom didn’t earn much and she a head of household, how does she owe any taxes? Is she SURE that she owes taxes?

The sister claims the OP on taxes so the mom can’t file HOH.
