I am in my second semester of my jr year and i am not feeling too good about my grades last semester. I have gotten straight a’s the first two years of hs except for maybe 2 b’s. the first semester of jr year i got:
advanced band-a
ap us history- b
ap stats- b
ap english- b
honors pre calc- c
ap chem- c
i hate that i ruined my good grade streak with only one a and 2 c’s! this semester i am getting all a’s so maybe that will make up for it? i am also studying extra hard for the sat and i have a lot of volunteer work and ec’s under my belt. do you think the 2 c’s i got will greatly affect my chances of getting into ucla?
You may have a problem: Keep in mind that the UC system doesn’t include your freshman grades in their GPA calculation. Calculate your UC GPA going forward if you were to get the grades you are hoping to get through junior year, and again with the grades your likely to get. Then check the Common Data Set, Section C to see how you compare with admitted students. Are you in-state or out-of-state? I assume cost is not an issue for you?
right now my gpa is a 3.84 and if i were to get all a’s this semester i would have a 4.1. i am from arizona and i have heard that its harder to get in from oos but I’ve also heard the other way around, that they accept more oos kids because they know that not everyone will accept their admission. cost is not a big issue for me, my parents have good jobs.
So your parents can pay $55K/year x 4 years= $220K with little to no financial aid for OOS. I would look to ASU and UofA first, before handing over that kind of money.
U of a is literally less than ten minutes from my house haha. I’ve always wanted to go oos and I am applying for scholarships
There aren’t any scholarships for the UCs.
If you want to go OOS, apply to colleges that offer scholarships, especially private colleges.
(In CA, you have St Mary’s, Chapman, LMU, Whittier, that would all be accessible to you. USC would be a reach.)
What other schools are you considering? The c’s may be a bit of a challenge.
“I’ve always wanted to go oos and I am applying for scholarships” Yep: you and everyone else. You really didn’t answer gumbymom’s question. Have you spoken to your parents about the likelihood of paying $55K per year for you? I don’t mean to nag but in my experience, HS students have little idea what their parents’ financial thinking is (esp. if there are sibs in the picture) and if loans will be required. If they say: sorry bud – here’s our budget – what will you do? Better to know today than a month from now. Also, no where do you mention your ACT/SATs. How’s that going? Better to focus on that than extraneous ECs that matter little. Good luck.
I haven’t taken either test yet, I’m still a junior. I’m taking the SAT for teh first time in March. I’m studying every day. Also I am planning to take the math 2 subject test because if I do well in it, at least maybe colleges will see that I do know pre cal even though I got a c.
Ucla, ucsd, csulb, uci, ut austin and asu. In that order.
Why not include UCSB, SDSU, Cal Poly Slo, and CPP?
But that doesn’t answer the question… can your parents pay 55K out of pocket? Don’t assume anything.Go and ask them.
Run the NPC on UCLA, CSULB, UT, and ASU. Bring the results to them and start discussing how much they’re willing to invest into your college education.
