Help!!!

I am an African American high school junior in MD. I am currently enrolled in the full IB Diploma (aka 6 really hard classes in 11th and 12th grade). I screwed up freshman and sophmore year but took most honors and pre-IB classes.

Freshman year 2.28
Sophmore year 2.71

If I were to bust my behind and get a 3.71+ junior and senior year. With a 31 or 32 ACT score, 450 volunteer hours at a hospital, and 5 clubs 11th and 12th grade, great recs, and great essay. (Probably going to travel to Africa next summer and help the sick and poor in case that helps). Do i have a chance to getting into UMD College Park. By the way I plan on going to Med School and doing PreMed at Maryland.

The MD state schools don't look at your senior grades, so doing well then will not help for Freshman Fall admissions. Might help if you apply for the January term. If they like a person but the person does not quite make the cut, they offer January admissions. Happened to two kids on my street. If you get the 31 or 32 on ACT, I suspect that you will get in. If you are worried, look into applying for both Fall and January admissions. They say it's much easier to get in as a January or transfer admissions than a standard Fall.

My daughter just got her diploma and the workload is heavy. I think it's going to be a rough road to be in five clubs and make the kind of leap in GPA that you are hoping for. Instead of five clubs, would you consider trimming that down and getting a leadership position in one or two of the ones you stay in?
My daughter's school also had a timeline for the extended essay -- it was done by winter break of her senior year -- do you have time figured in for your EE?

Im in somewhat of the same situation as the OP but I am out of state regarding low GPA early in high school.

I'm retaking it again on saturday and I've been aproved for extended time (I have a learning disability) so that should go up. Basically my higher SATs and low GPA make me look lazy, which I was (combined with my untreated LD), but I'm not now and I feel I screwed myself my first two years, especially because the average GPA is 3.9. I do a lot of comunity service and related stuff and I'm on the community service leadership team and President of the Social Justice Club. 4 years of cross country and track. I am applying for architecture and interned with Frank Gehry as a modelmaker. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if I got in as an undeclared though but I am highly considering a career in arch. Thanks in advance for your response.
