Help!

Okay so I applied and got into all of these schools, and I can't decide. I applied for their business schools and am planning on majoring in international business with a focus on marketing and probably getting a minor in Spanish.

NYU I end up with roughly $20,000 as loans per year...so about $80,000
UUIC I end up with about $10,000 in loans to pay off a year
Northeastern I end up with about $6,000 in loans to pay off a year

that being said, which of these schools would make more sense for me to attend for my majors and specializations? which school would you guys recommend? I love the city-life atmosphere, but really I'll be happy anywhere. My main issues are finding a great program for my majors with good study abroad (and relatively affordable) programs and with a good job at the end of my education.

I'm worried that northeastern isn't too good of a school, since everyone I've mentioned it to doesn't know where it is. Also, I'm worried that the study abroad programs aren't too good and are too expensive for me to afford. Furthermore, I'm worried that the co-op program will end up taking away from my college experience since I'll never get to see my friends and roommates when I'm away, and I wouldn't make those lifelong friends in college. Also, I've heard the people are very preppy, conservative, and rich, and I am afraid that if that's what the majority of the population is, I won't fit in.

What do you guys think?

In international business, only 1 co-op has to be international, so you’d still be in boston for the other 2 (if you wanted to be). Co-op definitely will not prevent you from making close friends. Sure, you’ll spend a semester out of the country… but that happens at most schools when people study abroad. It’s no different here.

No. Campus is very liberal, I don’t know anyone at this school who would ever ever describe NU as conservative. There are some rich kids here (it’s an overpriced private school…) but most of the people I know are pretty middle to upper-middle class. Even if you aren’t, no one will really notice/care. As far as preppy… I guess there’s a “preppy” population here, but compared to what I’ve seen at schools like BC and smaller LACs around new england, it’s really not bad.

Where are you from? I’m from the west originally and people there don’t really know NU, but around the northeast everyone will know it. And it has a very good reputation around boston.

You might want to take a look at this thread which covers some of the questions you asked:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/northeastern-university/671734-social-scene-more-questions.html

NYU is a great school and I absolutely love the school and the location… but since you said you don’t think you’d fit in with rich kids, I think that may be an issue. I have several friends who transferred out of NYU because it was just too outrageously expensive to live there, and so many of the students were from wealthy families and didn’t have to worry about money. Plus, taking out 80k of loans sounds outrageous for undergrad. I’ll graduate with about 20k in debt, and I’d be really hesitant to take out much more than that.

Regardless, I think you have 3 very good choices. NU is your best bet financially, and the international business program is very very good (I have several friends in the program, they’ve gotten awesome co-ops and have good job prospects). But, NYU and UUIC are also good schools.

Have you visited these schools? If possible (although I know it’s expensive and deadlines are close), it’s a really good idea to visit again and try to get a better idea of what all three schools are like.

Hey, I’m from Florida and I know exactly what you mean about the whole “no one knows it” thing. When I got in, NO ONE knew anything about it. Most people were thinking of Northwestern.

Yet as soon as I decided to go, most adults (not my friends) knew at least one person who went there. My chemistry teacher’s daughter went there, my history teacher’s got a masters there, my mom’s friend from work graduated with honors from there… It’s actually really surprising how many people DO know of it. And I promise you that the moment you come to Boston, everyone knows of Northeastern.

I don’t know much about NYU and UUIC, but I do know NYU’s business program is pretty highly ranked. So if you REALLY are focused on prestige (which is really just up to your preference), then NYU might be worth it.
