Helping D's friend find a Stage Design program - Help!

My D is applying for MT and I have been using CC advice for her all year. Her good friend has decided to apply for Stage/Scenic Design and I have offered to help with guidance. Please help me to help her!

Friend is an excellent student (3.8 GPA) but has low SAT's. She is talented and has quite a bit of stagecraft experience. She is currently searching for photos for her portfolio. She comes from a very rural town in upstate NY but would feel comfortable in any setting, urban, suburban or rural. Money is definitely a factor, as is distance. She needs to be within a 5 hour drive from the center of NY state. She will be applying to 3 NY state schools and 2-3 private or out-of-sate schools, hoping for scholarships.

She has not yet applied to any schools, so I am a bit worried about timing. Suggestions??

Ithaca College!!! They offer a BFA in theatrical production arts (with 2 possible tracks: theatre technology or theatrical design). Really impressive too-- heard a lot about it in student panel for theatre last year.

Syracuse

For state schools (depending on whether she is looking for more conservatory or not…)
SUNY Purchase
SUNY New Paltz
SUNY Cortland
Buffalo
SUNY Fredonia

… are all worth a look

Let me second the SUNY Purchase recommendation. After having toured the school, it is impossible for me to imagine that any school has a better facility for theater tech. I can’t speak to the faculty as I have not researched it or spoken to any. But top of the line facilties is a pretty good clue that the school is investing in top faculty as well.
