Does anyone know what type of a reputation Hendrix in Arkansas has? There is not much activity on their page.

As an Arkansan, I can give you the lowdown. I’m doing this via blackberry so forgive me for multiple errors. Lol Hendrix is without a doubt the BEST school in Arkansas.A HUGE percentage of the doctors in Arkansas graduate from Hendrix. The school is very strong in the sciences. the humanities are renowned as well. I know English, Drama, History, Religion, and the languages are particularly awesome. The campus is GORGEOUS! I spent six weeks there this summer for Arkansas Governor’s School. Politically Hendrix is a liberal spot in a more conservative state. Aside from wild parties thrown @ Hendrix, a lot of kids go to Little Rock which is not far at all. Hendrix can place people into top graduate schools AND it gives some kind of financial aid to 100% of students! My uncle went there, and he is currently an ER doctor in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I think a lot of kids are pre med, pre law, or want to pursue academia, although I’m sure they run the gamut.I’m not gonna lie, Hendrix kids are pretty fly! If you are looking at Southern Liberal Arts colleges, I would also put in a plug for Rhodes College in Memphis. If you have any other questions I will try my best to answer them :)

Hendrix is a great school. It’s not as popular as other top southern LACs and thus has an oddly high admit rate (around 90%, last time I checked), but it has solid academics and is quite generous with merit aid (~40% get at least a small amount of merit $).

It’s one of the CTCL:
[Hendrix College | Colleges That Change Lives](Hendrix College – Colleges That Change Lives)

In addition to Helvetica’s suggestion of Rhodes, Hendrix has a lot of overlap with the applicant pools of Sewanee, Guilford, Samford, and Birmingham-Southern.

Thank you for the responses. My daughter was recently admitted with a very generous merit scholarship, but we are from New England and have not traveled yet to the school. Other than what we have read in books such as CTCL and the internet, we don’t have much first hand knowledge. It seems beautiful and very welcoming though and we are planning on visiting in February.

Particularly within AR, Hendrix has a great reputation. It’s a decent reputation in the southeast region - those who know it think well of it. As several others have pointed out, there are a lot of connections between Hendrix and Rhodes. So if you’re coming all the way down to Conway, AR, come visit Rhodes. It’s 3 hours east on I-40. You could fly into Little Rock, visit Hendrix, drive over to Memphis, visit Rhodes, and fly back home from Memphis.

Hendrix does not have the name recognition that many other colleges have, but graduate and medical schools consider it a higher education hot spot. The Hendrix Odyessy WILL prepare you for postgraduate education, and postgraduate educators know it.

It’s good to hear such positive feedback about Hendrix. My daughter picked Hendrix as one of her choices because it has such a liberal atmosphere, that some of the other southern schools might not have. She is looking for a strong gay friendly atmostphere.
Thanks again for the help.
