It's that time of the year again, and guess who's back from underneath the textbooks!? Seems like some of the other friendly current UCR students are back too!

I, and surely the other current students, will go around answering all of you potential students' questions in your threads, plus this thread here!

So, go ahead, ask away! Be resourceful, and ask with purpose :D

Just be forewarned, some of us here don't take likely to the typical UCR-haters who are still stuck in the "high-school mentality" (which I have an article on here somewhere). Please don't bust the old "omg im going to like transfer to like another UC in like two years cuz like ucr sucks!" My pal Jason will put on the Scotty suit and take care of ya.. wink wink

Cmon and take a visit, our campus is awesome. Don't believe me? Come visit! I cannot stress the difference a visit can make! (another article on "comfort" and "fit" on here somewhere)
And before you do, here's a little taste if you really think UCR is boring:

ta-daa! UCR HEAT 2010 video It's so great you might need to watch it twice!

Convinced? Awesome! Here's the next step. Visit UCR

[Discover UCR!](http://discover.ucr.edu/)

Heads up, Discover Day for CNAS/BCOE is this Saturday! All the departments will be out to speak to ya’ll! Performances from the Orgs, campus/housing tours, etc etc!

I got accepted wayyy later than everyone else due to an application eligibility problem and didnt go to discovery day because i didnt even know if i was admitted yet. are there any other days for incoming freshmen to come explore the campus?

I’m pretty sure you can visit anytime. Just go to the Campus Tours office and ask for a tour. Discovery Days are only there for those who are of certain majors to see what’s out there for their major. (hope that made sense o.o; )
If I’m not mistaken, I’m pretty sure there’s another day on campus where they have events that are similar to what Discovery Days have. It’s like during April or May-ish. I forgot the name for it, but it’s very similar to Discovery Day. I’m not too sure if there will be booths for every major, but I do remember there were a lot of booths and games people could look at and get free stuff. Sorry, my memory is a bit fuzzy on this, but I do remember a day like Discovery Day happening after it. lol (I went to both Discovery Day and that other event date.)

oh sorry, i didnt see this thread before i asked my question could you answer it on there? it’s called “meal plan” i think.

-Is the Honors Program worth it? Is there a lot of extra work that has to be done?
-Do you recommend me getting a bike/scooter/or a longboard?
-Is it hard to switch majors?
-Is there rowing at UCR?

Thank you!

oh &&
with the Blue 75 meal plan how much can you eat with that? Two meals everyday?
Do you recommend me getting the Blue 75, the Gold 100, or the Tartan 150

All right, I’m just gonna repost what I put in the other thread here:

Meal plan.
Are they mandatory at UCR?
If not, how much do the meal plans actually cost? It doesn’t say on the Dining page on the UCR site. At least I don’t think so. I’m going to be living at an on campus apartment (I’m a transfer from CC), and I really like preparing and cooking my own food and stuff. In that case is it better not to get a meal plan for me?
Another question, does anyone know if there are a lot of Afghans at UCR? If so are they chill or are they really conservative?

How is the Math program for undergrads

@ahnyoungs2:
-Is the Honors Program worth it? Is there a lot of extra work that has to be done?
~ The only thing Honors is worth it is the priority registration. There are a lot of extra work you have to do every quarter to maintain your Honors Program status (3.0 GPA, community service work, etc)

-Do you recommend me getting a bike/scooter/or a longboard?
~ I usually walk, but I know getting a scooter or longboard is very handy. Just be careful and not fall down like few of my friends did. They broke their arms in the process. @.@;
A bike is good too, only a bit annoying, since you have to lock your bike on the bike racks, whereas for scooters/long boards you can just take it in to class.
Just my opinion~

-Is it hard to switch majors?
~ No it’s not that hard to switch majors. However, you might need to complete certain requirements if you want to switch to certain majors. According to my friend, she switched from BioEngineering to Computer Engineering, and found out she did more than she had to, since BioEngineering does a lot of chemistry, whereas Computer Engineering doesn’t do that much. It really depends on what major you want to change to. Check the requirements for that major and ask your advisor on how to change it. I know you have to go through a few papers and signatures to change your major. (not too clear on this process since I’ve never changed my major, only added a major o.o;)

-Is there rowing at UCR?
~ Are you talking about the sport? xD If you are, then I’m not sure if there is one. Or at least I’ve never seen the booth for rowing. If you aren’t…sorry that I didn’t answer your question properly D:!

~ They are only mandatory for dorm students I think. Those who live in the dorms have to choose a meal plan of Flex 5, Flex 7, Flex 10, or Flex Max.

^This link was just a estimation for what kind of meal plans there are and how much it costs for the dorms quarterly or monthly. It’s not entirely “correct” but just an estimation for 2009-2010.
It really depends on how much you eat. Personally I would say don’t get the meal plan if you plan on cooking for yourself. If it’s mandatory like Glen Mor has (I think), then just take the lowest possible plan there is if you plan to cook for yourself. The lowest meal plan would have to be Blue 75 I think, and that lets you go to the dining halls as well. :x
Just my input~

short answers to each question since I don’t have time.

Join honors?
no, unless you want priority registration

Bike/scooter/longboard?
Bike

Hard to switch majors?
Don’t know

Rowing?
no, unless you do it someplace else

Meal plan?
I didn’t even know they changed all the names…

How is the Math program for undergrads?
What is the air quality like these days?

Alumnus…

When do we know what financial aid rewards we get? And how?

I think MehediMD forgot about this thread :/

Join honors?
If you really want to impress grad schools… then go for it. Priority registration is always nice, of course.

Bike/scooter/longboard?
Walking is totally fine at UCR. The campus is small… one of the reasons I chose it. (: Plenty of people bike/scooter/longboard… no one will judge you if you do haha

Hard to switch majors?
It depends what major you’re switching to, I think. It’s really easy to get kicked out of your major though… just remember that. Also, switching majors early on is better than later on. Some classes you take for a certain major will not fulfill requirements for another major… so you will take longer to graduate.

Rowing?
I think not… :

Meal plan?
Blue 75 - 75 meals/qtr (~7.5 meals/week) and $675 dining dollars
Gold 100 - 100 meals/qtr (~10 meals/week) and $600 dining dollars
Tartan 150 - 150 meals/qtr (~15 meals/week) and $300 dining dollars
Note: There are ten weeks in a quarter.

How much do meal plans cost?
