Heres a Debate For You: Wording for the Apps ..uh 7?

hey guys

kind of silly question but...

I got 7th place out of the entire state for debate last year. (Which is making it to quarter-finals)

Which sounds better

Top 7 in the State of X for Debate
Quarter-finalist in the State of X for Debate

Thanks

Top 7 sounds better to me, because it sounds like you've actually won, since you're one of the "top", whereas "quarter-finalist" sounds like you haven't quite gotten there.

Just my two cents. :)

thanks...yea that makes sense.....any other two cents?

I'm in the same situation! Seventh place or quarterfinalist!

BUMP

top 7 cuz it doesn't specify how many people became quarter finalists.. it could be 64

^^good point.

Wait... Should you put "7th in State for Debate" or "Top 7 in State for Debate"? My question is should you put your specific place, or just top 7?

It seems to me like they'd know either way that you were 7th..it's not like saying "top 10"...7 is a pretty random number

can you prove that you are number 7. if not, but can prove that you were a quarterfinalist, it is better to say quarterfinalist because then if a college double checks it, they dont think you are a liar. well 7th makes you the second to worst person to make the quarterfinals (i'm guessing 8 people make it that far because 4 matches of 1 on 1 debate). I would just say top 8 and made it to the state quarter finals. either way, you look very strong. try talking to college debate coaches and getting recruited.

How could there be 64 quarterfinalists? There has to be 8 quarterfinalists, then 4 semifinalists, then 2 finalists, then 1 winner.

Make sure you mention how many people were in the competition.

This allows admissions officers to see just how competitive your accomplishment is.

Theoneo, what about National Merit semifinalist/finalist?

its 7, not 8, because there was a bye

bump
bump
bump

I still don't get it. Why don't you just put "7th" instead of "Top 7"

I'm in a similar boat for debate--2nd in state or finalist?
