Hey Admissiondan can you help me?

Hey,

The past two weeks I have been working on my essay for the common app and I was wondering how much time in general do the admission com. spend reading the essay??????
cuz my essay is really deep and it is the type that the more you think about it the better it gets... many people have told me that adcom only briefly skim the essay so it is best to not be too deep and just keep it simple....

thanks
taekwondo

First, please note I am only answering your question as it relates to how Hopkins reviews application. Every school has different ways they review applications, and also weighs the parts of the application differently.

For the Hopkins review process, essays are quite important. I typically rate them as the third most important thing, behind reviews of an applicant's transcript and an applicant's resume. That being said, the answer to your question is yes we will read your essay and not skim it.

[[[As an aside, for everyone...there is no need to keep creating new subject topics to ask me questions. You may ask them on old threads that have already started, as I will check those threads if new posts are added. So if there is a thread already with questions about essays / or interviews / or test requirements / or something similar to your question -- just post it on the old thread. Hope that makes sense!]]]

daniel...u said "applicants resume"...does that mean an explicit, separate resume or like the ECs and awards on the application?

when I say "resume" I mean your list of ECs, jobs, service, leadership, academic enrichment, honors, awards, achievements -- it is my all encompassing term.

you may send in a separate "official" resume but that is not required

Daniel Is it ok if one of my recommendations is from a sophomore honors science teacher? I know that some schools want both of the teacher recommendations to come from junior and senior teachers. Does JHU have a preference?

i dont think it really matters. i had mine from a teacher that i knew all 4 years and i know he wrote a strone one for me. get one that you feel is in teh best interest for you.

taekwondo39232: JHU only requires applicants to submit two letters of recommendation - one from a teacher and one from your guidance counselor. We STRONGLY recommend that the teacher rec. comes from a junior or senior year teacher.

You may submit additional letters of recommendation (max = 5 please!!!), and these supplemental letters can includes another teacher rec. from a freshman or sophomore year teacher.
