Does anyone know of any good four-year colleges/universities for English majors? Preferably in a small town, and with a good study abroad program.

I'd like to hear your suggestions!

what part of the country? large/small school?

Thank you for your reply!

Preferably a medium-sized school, and anywhere but the south.

I’m doing my own research, but I’d still like to hear suggestions!

You can find a good English program at most schools. What can you afford?

Erin’s Dad is right…

how much will your parents pay?

What are your stats?

Georgia College: [Georgia College](http://www.gcsu.edu/)

One of its fields of distinction is Creative Writing. Flannery O’Connor is a alumna from there. It’s the state’s Public Liberal Arts College, about 5,000 undergrads, in the historic Antebellum capital city of the state. Great study abroad. All this can be yours, if you can get over the “anywhere but the south” thing. :)

William and Mary in Williamsburg. It is in a small town but is 20-30 minutes from the Norfolk/VA Beach/Hampton/Newport News/Chesapeake/Portsmouth/Suffolk Metro area (Sometimes called the 7 cities) which is over 1 million people. On top of that Williamsburg is a very nice town with great historical area, an amusement park, and great food. Did I mention the outlets or the fact that the town is only 15 thousand people? It is without a doubt one of the best small towns I have seen. But enough with the location, the English program there is truly top notch. 32K a year for OOS tuition at the second oldest institution of higher learning in the United States.

LAC’s like Bates, Holy Cross, Bowdoin.

In your heading, you had mentioned you were interested in a “public college” with a strong English program. I believe UVa’s English program is ranked one of the top in the nation.

Why a public college/university? If your paying out-of-state tuition for a public college/university, a private school actually could be less expensive with need- or merit-based FA. Also, most of the better public colleges/universities outside the South are not going to be medium-sized.

You could get more useful suggestions if you were more specific about FA needs, your stats, specific preferences/interests for an English program, etc.

Erin’s Dad - my parents can help pay a yearly tuition of ~$20,000 or less. I’m going to depend greatly on scholarships, financial aid, etc.

UTPG - I was actually looking into W&M! It seems perfect for me. Now if only I could find safety schools that fit its mold…

Thank you!

Thank you, everyone else, for your suggestions. I’m looking into the schools you mentioned.

OP, if you don’t live in VA your cost for William and Mary will be $23K per Semester. What is your home state and what are your stats so we can see what might work?
