Hey! long time posters! Guess whose kid...

Happy to hear that, garland! Good luck!

Fantastic news! Would love to hear the whole story when all is said and done.

Wonderful news! Best wishes for all good things in the new year and new life!

Congrats -Keeping fingers crossed for you. S2 finally followed through and completed his last year. We have had many false starts and still waiting for S3 to follow through and actually go back. Hope yours does better for his return. It does just seem to take some longer than others to figure it out.

Thatā€™s great Garland! I remember how frustrated you were when he dropped out. There are many paths to take in life, and most of them are not straight!

Thanks, everyoneā€“Iā€™ll write more when all the pieces are in place, but thereā€™s a lot of logistics up in the air right now.

However, whatā€™s certain is that Garlandson is excited about going back and in a mindset which gives me confidence that the way things went six years ago will not repeat. As some of you have said, it takes some a little longer.

Mazel Tov!

garlandā€¦exciting newsā€¦happy for youā€¦I know it is a long time coming, but it seems things are falling into place finally. Yippee!

How exciting! Iā€™m happy for you and him, and no this must give you a sigh of relief. Looking forward to hearing all about it!

Better now than never, Congratsā€¦ :)

Like, like, like.
Great news.

Great to hear! My husband dropped out of college as a SENIOR, wandered around the country for a few years, got some experience as a carpenter and private school teacher, then went back at the age of 28 to get his BS and MS in engineering. Everything turned out well for him!

Great to hear. Some kids just take longer than others, but itā€™s nice that heā€™s now in the right mindset to do ths.

Terrific news for the New Year. (This made me realize that Iā€™ve been hanging around here for more than ten years. I will not even consider how many hours that might be.)

^Um, yeahā€¦:)

New year, new start!!! Congrats to your son.

Hooray!

I remember the whole tale, and he sounds like a fascinating young man.

As another long-time member, this board feels to me like the internet version of sitting on a bench together while watching our kids on the playground, or hanging out, waiting for the bell to ring, so we can drive them off to their other activities. Weā€™ve been together for years on end, getting to know each other and sharing our stories.

I guess I missed the earlier part of this story, but good luck to Garlandson!

One of mine dropped out just 2 classes short of a degree. Sad but their life. I am happy that your son has decided to return.

Update hereā€“Things are moving along well, so I figured Iā€™d add some information. Some posters knew more about this than others, I gather from posts here. I appreciated all the well-wishing postedā€“thanks!

The story:

S had dropped it in his senior year from Columbiaā€“for personal reasons, wonā€™t go into that. He had mostly done very well, until he didnā€™t. It was in the beginning going to be a one semester leave, but he just never could make himself go back, and after a couple years the assumption was he couldnā€™t.

Finally this year, he started to really have a hankering to go back to college and finish his degree. The plan at first was to look into the good state school near us. But he, and us, started to wonder if CU was still possible. He wrote to advising, and the people there were enormously helpful. It turned out there was a route for students whoā€™d been away long to reapplyā€“no guarantee.

So he applied to both schools, the local and Columbia. Was admitted very quickly to the local, and happy about thatā€“it meant he was going back to school. He knew heā€™d have to do at least a year there as a transfer, but it was inexpensive so he figured he could handle that.

Two days before Christmas he got the news heā€™d been accepted back to Columbia (have to say, he showed me the app letter he had to write, and theyā€™d have been nuts not to take him back.) Right after winter break he had a phone advising appointment with the advisor whoā€™d shepherded the application through. Sheā€™s been enormously helpful and theyā€™ve met since and sheā€™s totally rooting for him. He thinks the world of her (btw, Iā€™d been a little unhappy about what I saw as a lack of advising in his earlier stintā€“but I need to backtrack and say that it was there all the time; just required him to show up and use it.)

Filled out the FA stuff (they insisted on our info even though heā€™s 28! but their money, their rules). been on tenterhooks but got the package yesterday and better than expected.

Meanwhile, heā€™s signed up for 20 credits! :open_mouth: and commuting by train and subway three hours a day, so heā€™s gonna be a pretty busy young manā€“but we expect to attend a graduation in May.

So, yay!
