I'm a Phi Theta Kappa member in Missouri with a 3.5 gpa looking to transfer next fall (hopefully I'll have my A.A. in general studies). I'm planning to major in english with an emphasis on linguistics and eventually become an english professor. My mom is a flight attendant so I can get free flights anywhere so yea I'm looking at possibly going out of state. Here's a list of schools I'm looking at.

-Texas State University San Marcos (if I get a $1000 yearly scholarship i can qualify for in-state)

-Mizzou

-Truman State University (automatic scholarships)

-Northern Arizona University (I might qualify for in-state cuz my mom lives in az)

-Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA (ptk scholarship but still expensive)

-University of Texas

-University of Houston (automatic scholarships and qualify for in-state but next to the ghetto)

-Eastern Oregon University (no oos tuition)

-Oklahoma State Uni in Tulsa

-South Harmon Institute of Technology (anybody see accepted ;)

So people what college should I go to? Please, help a brotha out.

To me, the stand-out on that list is Texas (UT-Austin). It’s one of the best state universities in the country and has had a highly regarded linguistics department in the past (although I don’t know anything about the current program and faculty). Truman State sounds good, too, especially if it would be significantly cheaper for you than Texas.

What can your family afford? I agree that UT is the gem on the list but can you pay $100K over the next two years just to get your undergrad? If you want to be a professor you’ll need to at least get a Masters and more likely a PhD.

my yearly budget is around $20,000 but i heard that if you get a $1000 yearly scholarship you can qualify for in-state at UT and i definitely will try to get some kind of merit aid wherever i may go

To the best of my knowledge UT does not participate in that like some other TX schools. They don’t need to attract (more) top students. They have even stepped back from National Merit participation.
Major in english Texas State San Marcos is where I would go they have a few (quality) published authors teaching there for example Tim O’Brien who wrote The Things They Carried.

ah i see thanks for the info erin’s dad, where do you think i should go then if not UT?

and to utpg1234 that sounds cool having some published authors teach me would be awesome, that’s great to know thanks

anybody else have any preferences???
