wow, you've got a knack for picking colleges that are right at your level, not too high or low....though, i'd say you've got a great shot at all of these schools

I've noticed a lot of people who list schools like JHU, Cornell, Gtown, etc as matches. They may not have the rep of top ivies, but I don't think they're matches for anyone. Go to the admitted thread for Cornell and check out how many top SAT scores were rejected or waitlisted. That being said, the OP has great chances at Penn, Cornell, JHU.

that's just coz cornell and penn are known for valuing legacies and other hooks..specially those involving money...so without a serious hook it becomes random...
Also...penn and cornell know they would losekids to HYPS so if you dont show serious interests they wouldnt hesistate to waitlist or even reject the top kids...

please bearcats, everyone brings up those excuses. Beleive it or not, many (mostly) deserving people get into those schools. Where do you come up with your (unfounded) claim?

look at cornell's legacy admit rate....it's over 50% .... i think i saw this in the alum magazine but dont quote me on this

penn is over 65%
these 2 percentages are WAY higher than the other ivies

what more...as for penn, they only offer on-campus interviews for legacies............and they also claim that they hv a different pile for legacies..

and of course...more convincing evidence...as quoted from a former duke admissions personnel (i think everyone of u heard this already)...only 50% of the applicants at top colleges get in through pure merit which conflicts with your claim "many (mostly) deserving people get into those schools"

bearcats, how bout some hard stats? We all know that the botom 25% of a class is for special cases (urms, athletes, etc). Are you telling me that the majority of applicants at top schools are not merited being there? The percentage of students at Cornell who are legacies is 14%, high but hardly earth shattering.

i m talking about the admit rate though....cornell's admit rate is 28%....so if u say 50% of the legacies get in..that's about 2 times the regular rate...and that's kinda unfair......and no..i m not telling u that most applicants at topschools are not merited being in their respective schools...it's the former duke admissions officer who claims that....

Bearcats, Cornell's admit rate is now around 20%, soon to be lower, and no way is legacy rate (for those not qualified as regulars) 50%. Your second hand info ain't gonna win this argument.

sorry..i think YOU need to update your statistics...cornell's admit rate last year was 27%.....and on what basis do u claim there's NOWAY that legacy rate is 50%....
how bout the different track for legacy applicants at penn...how would you explain on campus interviews avalible ONLY to legacy applicants if it's not a big thing

Cornell's RD rate last year was 23% (ed is usually for hooks), with numerous people predicting a significant rise in apps this year. I'm sorry, it's just not plausible that over 50% of legacies who would not get in otherwise would get in b/c of that status...no way. Admittedly, this is a point neither one of us can prove, but it just seems very unlikely. I will agree on Penn, they have a rep for being legacy whores.
