SUNYBuffalo Honors College

Questions:
1. How will my chances at Cornell college of engineering differ if I apply ED instead of RD?
2. What should I aim for on the October SAT to be very competitive for CoE?
3. If I score a 34 or 35 on the September ACT, will Cornell still care about the 1380 SAT?

bump 10 char. really need some input :D

Ranger, do you know if Cornell wants to see every test taken from SAT/ACT testing?

Unless you have a couple of siblings in college, very hard to get financial aid at 200k income.

ED might help if your scores improve.

What should i aim for on the SAT and ACT to increase my chances? Also, would it be better to take the October SAT II for Physics to improve that score and the September ACT? Or take the October SAT I and september ACT ?

@defunkt im not sure

bump some more input please

Application seems fairly standard. ACT score its not excellent but nevertheless puts you in the running. Your SAT could be a little better. I don’t see anything that particularly jumps out from your ec’s. Most applicants always list along the lines of “president of National honors society, played varsity sport 4 yrs, some academic club for 3 yrs, instrument for 3 yrs”. Quantity isn’t going to help; quality is. Unless you can show that you have some sort of extraordinary commitment or passion to a specific ec or a significant impact you made under a leadership position, listing all of them isn’t going to help you much.

Also, I hate this fact but because you’re Asian (which is an ORM), that puts you at a slight disadvantage.

Why are you asking for financial aid if your parents income is 200000. Also Cornell makes you submit all of your scores. As for your ethnicity it is not a real help. You need to make your application jump out. Good Luck

for my instrument, i started doing private lessons at my request in sophomore year after being last chair in my saxophone section freshman year, then I performed good enough on the NYSSMA festivals to be selected for the all-county band twice and also successfully auditioned for an all-county jazz ensemble. is that what you mean by passion/committment?

how do my grades and classes and sat ii scores look though?

yeah, i know my parents annual income is about 200000 but they would really struggle to pay for cornell. i would need decent financial aid.

so what level of chance do you guys give me?

You will get zero financial aid. All aid at Cornell is need-based and with an income of $200,000, your EFC will assuredly be higher than the cost of attendance.

If you need aid, you need to look at schools which offer merit awards - that rules out all Ivies.
