Hi to OHS1979!

OHS,

I saw your post on the other thread and I do not want to hijack the thread. Just wanted to let you know I am so impressed with your ability to go through another round of SATs through your D2. I know it cannot be easy, especially if the youngster is not completely cooperative.
It is times like these I am thankful of having one child. (Though S really was a good kid who put up with much loneliness as an only child with very busy parent.)

I wish you and D2 the very best. Hope things come around for her and she begins to own the process for herself.

Wow, a google internship. What a wonderful opportunity that will be. Plus, I'm envious. I have seen the coverage on how well they treat their employees and staff, from good dining to fitness venues. I am hopeful of good news for your D. You know, I have discovered that someone who is ambitious and hardworking from NYU is very competitive in many fields. My surprise with this arises from my own image of NYU from the days when I attended college. (Sorry, at that point NYU was not even on the radar as a safety school for Hunter College HS students. My, how times have changed!)

Also, I have come to really appreciate the many, many fine parents behind all these remarkable students. You, writestuff, vonlost, milkandsugar, anialways, etc. etc. etc. This is by no means an exhaustive list. Just some of the people I have had the fortune to interact with here on some repeated basis. So many hardworking parents making the NYU education work for their kids, supporting them, strategizing with them and agonizing with their failures while celebrating their successes. I feel like I walk among many wonderful people. The parents are often unsung heros (heroines) behind the fine individuals many of these students are.

Anyway, OHS, do let us know if D1 gets her internship and how D2 comes along during this challenging college app process.

I hope you get a chance to reward yourself for the fine work you have done. I have been very busy being my own contractor and I think I have been rewarding myself for all these long hard years now that S appears to be well situated. I recently went into a buying spree, with discounted and sale items, for the "new" condo we are moving into, as well as for ourselves - hubby, S and I (though this time I took care of more of hubby and my needs, relatively speaking, after the banner year for S his Freshman year; still, I have already given S very nice cookware, knives, rice cooker, slow cooker, goose down coat, raincoat, insulated and lightweight rain pants, new shoes, etc. for this year). So looking forward to being at the new place. It is oceanfront and will be relatively maintenance free once we are done with repairs to the unit from water damage. Can't wait!.

OHS,

Above post, I should have written, “…and agonizing with their STRUGGLES while celebrating their successes…”. I honestly have not heard about too many failures.
All these kids seem to have found their niche or worked out problems well.

Just a general impression of the really successful NYU students; achieving, defining themselves and their career interests, and happily adjusted to life in NYC/ NYU.

Hey evolving

Great to hear from you again. Congratulations on moving into a new home. I do understand doing up the house can be be such tiring and time consuming project but once it is done the feeling of achievement and happiness is unbelievable. It is worth the effort. So here’s a toast to you and your family and wishing you great times in your new home.

And thank you for the kind words on the parenting part. Really appreciate it. And like you and many others just giving it our best and hoping things will turn out great for all our kids at NYU. Speaking for myself coming on this forum and sticking around was one of the best things i did and I want to thank you specially because you were the first one to respond to my desperate post. And since then I too have had wonderful interaction here as well as on the other forums. It made my journey as a parent a lot more easier knowing that there were whole lot of people out there dealing with the same issues as I was. So a big thank you to all of you.

Thanks once again Evolving, for all your support and kind wishes. My daughter at NYU was always so conscientious and motivated, it’s difficult to deal with my younger daughter who is not particularly invested in putting in the required effort for the SATs and other college bound obligations. She is a student who gets As and Bs, which is fine, but it would be so much easier if she would not give me such a hard time when it’s time to roll up her sleeves and do the practice sections she needs to do. Sigh.

As for the Google internship… well, our hopes are high, but there are likely many thousands of applicants for these summer positions. I will keep you posted if I hear any news from my daughter. The amazing thing is even having the opportunity to apply for this kind of internship. NYU has the potential to put her in contact with the people who can help her make her dreams come true. It’s all a process.

I wish you lots of luck as you get your new home in order. Moving is a lot of work, but if you take it one step at a time and keep your sense of humor (not to mention keeping a supply of wine nearby), the process will be easier to handle!

This forum has been wonderful for helping the parents keep their sanity. It provides tons of valuable information for students and also for their long-suffering parents. I think we all deserve a pat on the back for helping our kids celebrate their victories and deal with setbacks. Let’s hear it for us!! :)

Adding my thanks for the kind words and all the support you have given to me and all the other parents on this forum. Enjoy your oceanfront view!
