"Hidden" Extracurriculars--What are Yours?

I read all the hindu epic poems and John Grisham Novels and I self studied World and European History… I was afraid to put this on my app but I am soo glad I found this thread! Worth putting down? =)

Would fire-breathing count?
I never learned it through “formal” instruction but sort of started through a really informal crash course at Burning Man a few years back. Any way I can work this in? =X

^that would be crazy for a supplemental video, i know some schools have a thing where you have a 1 minute little video but I don’t know what schools.

What about 12,000 posts on a basketball forum?

hahaha fire breathing. why not? It will definitely be interesting. But colleges might be a bit skeptical. No clue why. But be prepared to meet with admission directors to prove your skills just in case. :-)

I’m level 5 on yahoo answers with over 900 answers and got a top contributor badge in Books & Authors once.

where will that get me? lol

haha im about the same but for fantasy sports… and saugus i got a few thousand posts on a couple sports forums but i don’t think any of them are worth mentioning, the adcom would just be like er… ok :D

LOL THAT IS TOO FUNNY. “now we know why China is surging ahead…”

I’m * ** really * ** big on open source software, programming, and computers in general. I’m taking computer science and am in a club that dabbles in it, however the sheer out of time I spend exploring computer science and technology isn’t explicitly stated as an EC(I wasn’t aware I could).

I’m also really good with music and have learned several instruments outside of band class. I may put a laundry list of my musical instruments on my common app, or devote an essay to my passion for music.

Looking up a lot of stuff on wikipedia…

I’ve read every book by Margaret Mitchell and Harper Lee :D

Oh and I probably have all the arias of the standard Italian opera repertoire stuck in my head :)

Do you think that’d be of any help in Arts and Sciences Application? :S

(seriously, like over 20 hours of music I can dish out of my mouth without repeating anything : D)

Hmmm what about being a huge musical theater fan? I myself do not act or sing or anything of the sort, but I’ve seen a ton of musicals and have devoted quite a bit of time to boards regarding said musicals.

Also I sort of write fan fiction…How could I include this on my application? If I even should.

Darn, I wish I still crocheted! I learned several years ago. It was something everyone on my team would do on bus rides to competitions and stuff, haha. But I’ve forgotten how to by now…

annbet–“contraceptions”? The FDA would be interested! :D

But seriously, all of these ECs are great for letting admissions committees know you are a “well-rounded”, interesting person they would love to have on their campus!

I revived my school’s newspaper committee, working as an editor. It used to be a two-page newsletter that was published twice a year or so; now it’s being published every 2-3 weeks and is 12 pages long with school events, community news, opinions & insights, reviews (music/movies/books), creative writing, and comics.

And I blog regularly. I write a lot, just about anything and everything of my interest.

-I taught myself ukulele, and now I’m teaching myself guitar.

-I love horror movies, and I try to watch as many as I can.

-I don’t do any sports at my school, but I rock climb, hike, mountain bike, and spelunk (I’ve been in at least 10 caves across the nation).

awesome stuff, so I wanted so ask would any of these count for an EC:

I watch a looot of TV Shows, and I mean a lot, I have seen probably around 80 different TV shows, most of them all of their seasons, I research the actors, how old are they, where were they born, where did they go to school, what other productions are they in.

I have seen almost every Robin Williams movie, I have about 10 left, not counting the upcoming ones

I enjoy researching a lot, almost everything that interests me I research it, like I bought a ticket for a show of Cirque du Soleil, before that I researched their history, their different shows, how much some of their costumes cost, etc.

I watch a lot of theater - sometimes I go to theater 3 -4 times a week, I collect National Geographic, not for that long though, only for 4 years now, but intend on keep doing it, haha

oh and I jump rope, just for fun

So many less than serious responses. What a shame because there is merit to the idea.

From the OP, item #1 (dollhouses) demonstrates the ability to do esoteric research and then painstakingly construct precision items.

OP #2 to me is not so impressive because just about anyone can read every book on a list (or claim the same).

OP #3 is a great essay possibility because the comparisons between countries and cultures, especially in today’s world, might prove valuable both to the student and the school. I would want to know what impact the letter writing had so I find it more valuable as an essay than as a listed EC.

OP #4 demonstrates charity and selflessness.

I think the message of the OP is that if you spend significant time of something that you believe is valuable to your personal growth or to the betterment of your community, you should consider including it in the application. It’s really a two-part test: Can you defend the activity as valuable to a well-educated complete stranger, and can you look in the mirror and do the same? If both answers are yes, you have an application worthy activity.

I have every Beatles song on my iPod.
I’ve been able to survive for nearly 15 years so far living in a 350 sqft apartment with 2 other people (haha, joking (although it really is 350 sqft)).
I like to walk along the Hudson River to Stuyvesant during the afternoon.

What about solving rubik’s cubes for time?
