Hey everyone,

I just wanted to give a little advice to those parents who are beginning to admissions cycle. A little background - my daughter began talking about boarding school in the 6th grade. Hubby and I were initially against this idea. As 8th grade approached and she kept bringing it up, I began to really investigate the possibility. I knew there was no way we could afford this for her. I read on this forum ways parents sacrificed for their children. I asked lots of questions. We also have a younger son at home and I refused to let him do without so his sister could have.

Fast forward a couple months - daughter kept on and on about applying and we decided to let her apply - we told her the only way she could go was with full aid or a scholarship. With our income, >150K, I knew full aid was never going to happen. But, we agreed to let her apply and it be a lesson on "things don't always go your way." She was so determined. She studied for her SSAT's, made a 96 composite and made her list of schools - all girls schools. She was only interested in schools that could be considered "Hidden Gems." She wrote her essays and we waited for March 10.

She was accepted into all 6 schools she applied to with varying amounts of aid - from 25K to 41K in aid. I still didn't believe it was possible. And then, that afternoon, we received a call that would forever change our lives....one small school called and told me she was awarded the only full merit scholarship they give. I was floored. She was thrilled.

Fast forward to this past weekend - well, we flew to her new home. I could have never imagined this would be our life a few short months ago. She's all moved in and we said our goodbyes on Friday. I've gotten some short texts the past couple of days - she's in love with school, she's met some amazing girls, and she's so excited for the year.

So, parents, as your begin your search - don't discount those "hidden gems." They could be as equally perfect for your child as some of the bigger named schools. I'm so glad I came here for research. Our lives have been forever changed. I can't wait to see what the future holds for my sweet girl. I miss her terribly. But, I know she's going to do great things.
