Hidden gem Catholic colleges with big merit?

@MACmiracle I did a Google search on liturgical dancing and Marywood and found some not very flattering articles. Thanks for bringing it up since we had not considered that angle. We had heard about the other concerns you alluded to. Marywood is ranked way below U. of Scranton and Siena on D’s list, mainly due to the high percentage of commuters, so there is very little chance she would be going there anyway. But from an affordability point of view, it would be a great option for someone. We visited in 2016 and were very impressed with the quality of the professors and the facilities (high tech and modern), much of which are new or newly renovated. They just hired a new President which may also be a positive sign.

Bellarmine

@newjerseydad888, what is the area like around U of Scranton? I’ve seen areas in Scranton that are very residential and suburban in feel and otters that are gritty.

As I mentioned, D would prefer suburban or rural. I went to Rutgers, lost the housing lottery after freshman year and lived in a bad part of NB for three years where I had to deal with crack paraphernalia scattered around the house, bars on my windows, someone trying to break in while I was there alone, and having to limit my activities so I wouldn’t have to walk home by myself after dark, which is really hard in winter. I really don’t want D to have that stuff to worry about on, at least not on a daily basis.

Last time I was at Marywood was 2012.

They had a nice Open House and fed all of us a continental breakfast and a nice lunch.

@LOUKYDAD, thanks!

Bellermine looks like a nice college in a nice area. I ran the NPC and it gave a fafsa-like result. It stacked merit, I think, since different awards were listed, and there was an additional note that more awards were available for musicians.

Better offer than my son received and he scored in 93 percentile on SAT and ACT, plus both parents are alumni. They refused to negotiate their offer so we scratched them off the list.

@MACmiracle You are welcome! Not well know outside of region, but Bellarmine is well thought of locally and a school I perceive as being an up and comer. Nice campus in a safe area of the city. I believe the president of the school passed away last year and I am not sure if they have hired someone new to lead the school. Their business, nursing and education programs are especially good. No personal connection to the school myself. I am a partner in a regional CPA firm and we have hired a lot of their grads over the years. If you decide to visit and want advice on where to stay in town or things to do, let me know. I could also put you in touch with one of our staff who is a recent graduate and she played soccer there, if that is of interest. Good luck!

so sort of off topic - but i just googled helena MT where carroll college is - it’s absolutely beautiful!!! wow! love montana!

catholic how about creighton U in omaha?

Regarding Carroll College in Helena, my husband noted that it would be excellent for a student interested in government or law as it’s also the state capitol and it’s so small there, Carroll College students would have unique access to state government and pretty astounding internship potential. Also, he was in love with the area, if he could ditch Los Angeles right now and move to Montana, he would!

May I ask if the 21k was solely merit based?

My husband would ditch NJ for Montana in a minute. I watched some of the campus ministry videos which show the kinds of outdoor activities the kids do and it’s unbelievable. I know if I show my husband those videos, he’d want DD to go there and he’d go to. However, he is also partial to Kentucky bourbon.

@ironcity50 yes, we have gotten anything from the FA office yet, we won’t be eligible for need based anyway.

@MACmiracle We were very pleasantly surprised by the U. of Scranton when we visited and it went from low on the list to being in the top three out of about 15 schools we visited. We were primarily focused on smaller LACs in PA and NY and did not want anything in a city. The campus is up the hill from downtown Scranton, in a mostly residential section, towards a very nice park called Nay Aug. Also, Scranton is a very small city so we did not feel it would have the negatives that we normally associated with a “city”. It did not feel urban at all although it may be classified that way. The campus has a nice layout and did not feel too large, even though population-wise (at about 4000) it was almost double the size of the other schools we were looking at. Most of the buildings faced inwards, towards the center of campus, giving it a true campus feel. We felt very safe on campus and in Scranton.

@MACmiracle We also liked UScranton (although my S ended up attending a different Jesuit school). The campus is compact but very nice. And I think the off campus housing is very close (ex. across the street) to the campus. I’d also suggest you look at Siena College which is in NY near Albany which was another Catholic school that impressed up during our visit.

How about St. Louis University? It is a great Jesuit school.

Scranton NPC gave a high scholarship and a grant, but the net cost was still over $30K. Sienna’s was less.

Fordham, Catholic U, Scranton and Siena.

@MACmiracle Not surprised – Siena has a lower than average cost of attendance (for a private college).

I told my son when he received DU letter that 20k merit was an insult. When he gets his acceptance to UNC chapel hill I will give admissions one more chance to make things right otherwise he will be a tar heel

Loyola gives 27 but the cost is still about 30
