High ACT Low GPA help? ill chance back

Hey everyone I'm gonna be a senior next year (class of 2011) and I'm looking into Northwestern (Early Decision), Cornell (Early Action), Carnegie Mellon (Early Action), Cal-Berkeley, Umich (Early Action), U of Illinois, Purdue, Viriginia Tech, Penn St and Wisconsin-Madison with an anticipated major in engineering (not sure what kind yet). For the top schools I more want to know my chances of acceptance but at the lower ones I am more concerned about scholarship money. I also really wanna know how good my shot at EDing Northwestern would be. I'm a white male from a suburb of Chicago in a highly competitive public school that sends many grads to Ivies. Here are my stats:

UW GPA: 3.74
W GPA: 4.18
My school doesn't rank but I assume im at about 9-10% in my class

SAT2: I plan to take Math 2, Chem and maybe Bio/Physics

No AP’s till senior year???
That might look quite bad to colleges, they might think that you are not challenging yourself and the courseload is too easy.

^ That, but I think the ACT will make up for that. EC’s are solid, and GPA is average. Your chances are quite good everywhere except the schools to which you are applying early. Just make sure you’re taking as many AP’s as possible senior year.

The fact that you haven’t taken any AP classes basically nullifies your GPA. There’s no way you’ll get into Northwestern, Cornell, Mellon or Berkeley. You should be good for the rest of the schools, though.

^i AGREE. You didn’t challenge yourself in your classes. It’s easy to get 4.0 UW gpa when you’re in baby classes.

there better be a good reason you don’t have AP before senior year.

And I know that neither Cornell nor Carnegie Mellon do early action.

Carnegie does has early action. You must attend their summer ap/ea program and got an excellent grade then you will be invited for early action.
are you at the program right now (or last summer)?

Carnegie does have EA

ok heres why i havent taken any APs. In math u must take geo alg 2 and trig/precalc before ap math is even available thus my bc calc senior year. for science u must take chem/bio/phys before ap chem/bio/phys thus i had to wait until i had completed the necessary pre recs. in history and english I dont exactly accel so i decided to just stick with the regular courses in those. and in spanish u must take up thru 4 because 5 is the ap course so i am taking that as a senior. im trying to take advantage of as many aps senior year as i can

buuuuuuummmmmpppppp

buuuuuuuuuuummmpppp

buuuuuuuuummmmmmmmpppppppppp

ur ACT is above the average at northwestern but your GPA is kinda low. pls chance me back

bbbbbbuuuuuuuummmmmmmmpppppp

You have stellar standardized test scores but my only concern is the easy courseload in junior year. If you score well on your AP exams (meaning a 4 and above on all) UMich and Virginia Tech will be a nice match. Please chance me back!

You do realize that if you apply ED to NW then you’d have to go there if you got accepted. Therefore, it is kind of worthless to apply EA anywhere else unless you think you won’t get accepted to Northwestern…

i think its worth EAing everywhere just as a safety in case NU doesnt accept me. im pretty sure if i ED at NU tho that i will get in

GPA: On the weakend due to lack of course-load. Most schools have programs where you can take college courses (and thus the AP test) at local community colleges. Also, you don’t want to make it seem like you are a victim of your environment. You were perfectly capable for self-studying for any AP test, ie: psychology, environmental science, computer science, etc. that don’t have prereqs. Self-studying is usually the path for most students in schools that have policiies that prevent students from reaching 5+ AP classes by the end of junior year. An easy course-load + low-end GPA is a terrible combination

Scores: Decent, nothing to smile or frown upon by college admission officers. Get 770+ for chem/math/bio/physics and you’ll be on track.

ECs: As a engineering major you don’t seem to show much engineering interest thru your ECs.

Virginia Tech and Perdue seem more for you than Carnegie Mellon and I might reconsider where i use my ED if I were you. Berkeley has been unpredictable for all my friends, but I’d still think it’s a high match for you.
