High functioning student on autism spectrum

I am interested if anyone has experience or knowledge with schools in New York, specifically Long Island, NY, that deal with students on the autism spectrum that are very high functioning. My son is a good student, mid 80's average, but not a good SAT taker. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

cammic my son is also very high functioning autistic/aspergers. We dont live in NY but done be afraid to check out other schools that he may like.

my son is at my alma mater 50,500 students. They have an excellent DSO students with disabilities organization run by the school. My son is have a tough time this semester it is his first. We should have had him take easy classes until he got used to being alone. Instead he dived into Chem and Calc for Engineering and it has been very difficult.

Socially he was doing too much and fell behind. Two weeks into the semester he realized he was behind so his grades suffered. But now he is back on course.

Good luck to you and your son. And congratulations on making it this far. We both know how difficult it was you are to be commended.

What about Hofstra? They are supposed to have good disability services. Know about their program for ADHD, not sure about autism.

OP, you are in the perfect location. I envy you. Google “Mitch Nagler” and go from there.

Great resource, Missypie. I read his article on the college experience with AS and found it to be incredibly pertinent!

Wow, missypie, that sure hits the nail on the head! I’m emailing it to DS.

Adelphi

Friends son is there and getting incredible support.

While he does not have Autism, he is socially immature, always has been, and “special needs”. Friend does not see son able to manage in many jobs. He did however, apply tot he business program and was accepted. She/he is very happy with all the guidance he is getting there.

Good luck to you.
