Can she be independent for what? For financial aid…no, she canno t be considered independent. She k owns where her mom is. She last lived with her mom.
For financial aid purposes she needs to include her mom.
Since she has stayed in CA, I believe she continues to have instate status for tuition purposes…and I think for Cal Grant purposes.
But if you are looking at 2015-2016, she needed to submit her fafsa by March 2. Did she do so?
Tbh I dont think she filed fafsa. She told me that she was in the process but later told me that her step dad wouldn’t give her his tax information. Her school said that she must claim both of them. If its only based off her mom’s income, she will qualify.
Is there a deadline for BOGW?
also just to make for the responses above, her mother and step father are legally married(living in different states), not separated. So she only has to claim her mom’s income?
She needed to file her fafsa by March 2, I believe.
Her parents ARE separated. It doesn’t matter if they’re still legally married. They are no longer “a couple”, so they ARE separated, even if they haven’t started legal proceedings.
Your friend needs to make sure she uses the right language. They ARE separated, the marriage is ending, they are living separately.
She needs to file FAFSA by March 2 for Cal State aid. There is no deadline (well, next June) for federal aid. If her mother filed taxes with the step father, the incomes will have to be separated out for FAFSA, but it can be done.
Wow you guys are amazing! Thank you guys so much! Hopefully she can get BOGW. I will help her speak with the schools financial aid office.
Im so grateful for this site as it is filled with knowledgable people!
History…if she is starting college in September this year, her fafsa needed to be filed by March 2 of this year. Is this the case?
I do not understand how they are requesting information from a stepparent who is no longer living with biological parent as the stepparent has no legal obligation to student to pay for college or to provide his financial information.
Was the FAFSA filed using the mom’s income and assets. Did student indicate on the FAFSA that the parents are separated and the date of separation?
