When I mentioned Northeastern to my Mom, who is from NE and in her mid 70s, she said it was a school for kids without any other options. I laughed because my D could never get into Northeastern. Vanderbilt had something of a country club reputation when I was looking at schools in the mid 90s. When I looked at Vassar it was a disaster, alumni funding had dried up after coeducation. Schools change over time as we all know.
OK, I’m not particularly high on HPU, but let’s clear up a few things here…

The president is crystal-clear that he thinks universities should be run more like businesses and that the ‘business’ of a university is preparing students for adult life. So, they own that they do marketing and advertising like a business. Like it or loath it, they are just taking the veneer off what an awful lot of ‘respectable’ colleges. cf University of Chicago! They are also doing the Vandy trick of incentivizing high achievers with good scholarships.

By ‘prepared for adult life’, they absolutely do NOT mean doing your own laundry- this is a college that offers ‘concierge’ laundry services! (https://www.highpoint.edu/concierge/campus-concierge-dry-cleaning-service/). A successful HPU grad will be able to afford having their laundry done for them, their car serviced and an accountant! They mean ready to join the workforce and build a successful career, so lots of emphasis on practical learning, internships, etc.
Imo, it is a great school for students who need a bit more attention/hand-holding, whether for mild LDs or simply needing a bit more maturing. As posted above they do get students into med & law schools and the education major is actually objectively very strong.
100% it is a fit school.
Sounds like one of those “Colleges that Change Lives” type of school.
The computer science major is ABET accredited.
Some schools actively celebrate employment options obtained by their students; others do not. I have had children at each type of school ( not HPU). The President and Dean at one were promoting an atmosphere of celebrating career progress, which does lead to more students considering and discussing various careers, networking with each other and with alumni, taking courses relevant to those careers, and preparing for them. Yes, everyone has a career center, but they are not all equally active, nor do they all have high level support. For some students, it would not matter. For others, it does.
Are you sure about that? HPU website says “The Webb School of Engineering programs operate under the guidelines outlined by the accreditation organization ABET.”
However, High Point does not show up on a search of the ABET-accredited programs.
I may be thinking of another school
Could also be in the process of getting certification- the process takes 18+ months
Wake Forest engineering was recently accredited
And, I believe Wake stated from the start that they were in the process of getting ABET accredited.
I have two children that have gone to HPU. I agree it is very different than any other college. Part of the reason is that Dr Nido Qubein is the first President who is a business man. So yes he thinks more like a business would then traditional colleges. It is part of the reason he is so good at fund raising for the school and why he does things that may seem non academic- like the new parts of the campus, the food trucks, etc. I personally like it as it really prepares your child will interact in the business world after college.
