High Praise for Sarah Lawrence College

Hi. Congratulations to your daughter. I can’t specifically answer your questions in regard to your daughter’s intended course of study. I can tell you that because the students have such close communications with faculty, students are more able to direct their learning in each course to their area of interest. For my daughter, the unique academic setting has been ideal because she has always been self driven in her academics. The evaluations that she recieves are incredible in that it is very apparent from reading them that the faculty knows each student and their area of study very well.

Yes, Sarah Lawrence is a small school. That may not be what your daughter wants. It is exactly why more daughter chose SLC. She loves the intimacy of the classes and the relationships that she has with the faculty. The close proximity to the city has been essential for her , as she loves the museums, the arts, and all that NYC has to offer. She is in the city quite often and enjoys it very much. I am pleased that she is being exposed to so many cultural activities.

As a parent, I could not be more pleased with the level of engagment that my daughter has in her academics. She has been free to explore many subjects that she was not even aware of.

I wish you the best of luck. I think a visit to the school is a great idea.

“As far as left leaning, of course they are. Aren’t most young intellectually inclined students left leaning”

I was curious if the students were politically open minded. If they were as judgemental as this statement implies (which I’m sure you made with the best of intentions), I suppose that answers my question.

My comment was meant to be tongue in cheek. I am sorry that you found it judgmental. I am sure that most bright young college students are open minded. Sorry you did not like my comment.

It is always hard to tell in a few sentences if someone is being light hearted or heavy handed, sarcastic or honest (I am often rightfully accused of being sarcastic). But I honestly am attempting to figure out the true atmosphere of some colleges that sound appealing. My kid is very moderate and unbiased, though he has friends on the far left and the far right. I suspect that he doesn’t care too much about the political leanings of students on a campus, as long as it isn’t a strong culture of hateful/extreme (either side). There have been a few campuses I’ve visited, where they go on and on about how non-judgmental, diverse, and open to any possible ideas and debate they are…and when you ask them about political diversity, they are contemptous and highly biased, without realizing the sad irony of it all. :(

This is great stuff! I was wondering if anyone had the time to chance me for SLC? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1137234-chance-me-ill-chance-back-sarah-lawrence.html

Thanks :)
