High prices of grocery in T-Town

This Farmer’s market might be a nice option, especially for students who are off the full meal plans and catering for themselves.

Some people are very interested in very fresh and organic. I saw mention of the Farmer’s Market on UA campus, and glad that is available for UA community. Growing up in an agricultural area, we always had a farmer’s market, and live in AL city area where there are numerous farmer’s markets.

There is a Farmers Market on Saturday from 7am to noon located at the River Market. To get there by walking, just take the River Walk to the end, going towards the amphitheater.

It is quite a bit larger than the Farmers Market on campus. I was there two Saturdays ago and there was an abundant variety of fresh vegetables, fresh picked fruit, preserved jams and pickles. There were also fresh eggs, organic items and a cheese vendor. There were homemade breads and sweet treats. The bonus, in my opinion, are the people themselves. Just speaking to the vendors is a treat, ask them about their produce or pickle recipes.

Just like any niche market, the organic and farm fresh products are not cheap. However, I think the prices are not extraordinarily high and the products usually tastier than store bought.

There are some specialty items that are pricey but beautiful… check out the unique hand made cutting boards.

When I was there last, there were also live performers playing banjo music. For me, it is a must do everytime I am in town.

Thank you for the info on the farmers market. I love those kind of events.

The farmer’s market in my town has a vendor that bakes gluten free bread. I know several have mentioned gluten allergies. I wonder if there may be the same at the River Market? Might be worth checking out!

i just have to say…the prices in Tuscaloosa are (overall) not more expensive than elsewhere. Sure we can find a few items that might be pricier, but we can find many more that are cheaper.

The first-day-of-school issue of The Crimson White has a nice story on the Farmer’s Market on p. 9:

Very nice that this is brought to campus.

The larger Farmers Market has a permanent home on the Black Warrior River…an inside location that is open on Saturday mornings.
