High Rank and low SAT score vs. Low Rank and High SAT score?

Which situation is "better" for colleges? I was thinking that the low SAT kid would be better off because a high rank USUALLY shows a lot of commitment, work ethic, etc. HOWEVER, the High SAT kid might just go to a crazy competitive school (like me).

Opinions?

by High Rank I mean like top 10% and High SAT=2100+

At my school the 90%ile score on the SAT is over 2300. Many students who are not in the top 10% have over 2300 or even 2350. However, they are not bad students and would probably be in the top 1% at most schools. For rank, it really depends at my school. I know at other schools, grade inflation is increasingly prevalent.

This being said I believe that a high rank and low sat scores is better than a low rank and high sat scores. However, medium rank (top 15%) and high sat scores (2200+) would be better than high rank (top 10%) and “medium” SAT scores. Once you reach a certain rank, the SATs become more important as they compare you to the rest of the national applicant pool. Grades can show how hard you study, but they can only go so far. A 4.0 student at one school could be struggling to get Bs were he at a very competitive public school.

Just my take. :)
