High Reach, Low Reach, Match, Safety

can you guys please tell me what category the following schools fall into based on my info

GPA: 3.8 UW
SAT: 1400 old 2100 new
ACT: should i take or not?
Rank: 35/510 top 7%

NYU:
Cornell:
Georgetown:
University of Chicago:
Northwestern:
George Washington University:
Dartmouth:
Brown:
Columbia:
Emory:
University of Florida:
University of Pennsylvania:

I'm just trying to narrow down a long list of places that seem appealing to me....
THANKS SO MUCH.

state residence
sex
ethnicity
etc. needed

NYU- match
Cornell- match
Georgetown- match
University of Chicago- match
Northwestern- match/slight reach
George Washington University- safety/safe match
Dartmouth- reach
Brown- high reach
Columbia- high reach
Emory- match
University of Florida- safety (if in-state)
University of Pennsylvania- reach

Florida, Male, Caucasian

i was expecting you guys to say NYU, GWU, UF match to safety, but Cornell, G'Town, UoC, Emory?? matches?

Cornell, Georgetown and UC are reaches and Emory is a slight reach/match

when you say reach, does that mean i probably will not get in?

Reach means its not guaranteed, but that you have a shot and it's worth trying for.

well i mean these days a 4.0 1600 valedictorian does not seem to be guarenteed!

Reach- chances for a school are equal to or below the admissions rate of a given college. Ex. your chances for Georgetown are probably about 20%.

technically they are 20% for everyone else who applies to lol

would my chances change if i brought my gpa up to a 3.85 and my rank up 5 spots to 30/510?

would my chances change if i brought my gpa up to a 3.85 and my rank up 5 spots to 30/510?

I stick with Cornell as a match. Only 41% scored above 700 in CR, and 60% above 700 in math; the OP's GPA and rank also compare favorably. Chicago has become more selective, but it is still a match. Georgetown may be a reach; I'm not as familiar with their admissions.

If your GPA was lower I would say yes, but you are fine there as is. Top 5% would help but 5 spots wont do that.

thats true with cornell...???

At Cornell you have to figure that all or most of the unhooked applicants fall into that above 700 category so the OP is in the lower part of the unhooked applicant pool in terms of SATs. Based on the info posted it would seem like a reach, though this is only one part of their applicaiton...

NYU: high match
Cornell: reach
Georgetown: reach
University of Chicago: reach
Northwestern: reach
George Washington University: high safety
Dartmouth: very little chance
Brown: very little chance
Columbia: very little chance
Emory: low reach
University of Florida: safety
University of Pennsylvania: reach

I would say you have a chance at the reaches, but that it is unlikely. The sum of five unlikelys could result in one or two acceptances though. You might to consider scrapping Brown or Columbia and add a couple more low reach/high match schools in the Wesleyan, Colgate, Middlebury, Bucknell, Johns Hopkins, Union, Brandeis, Trinity range unless you would be perfectly happy with NYU or GWU.

well i've wanted to go to dartmouth forever so i'm definitely applying there i'm also definitely applying to university of chicago, northwestern georgetown, and some of the toehrs you said were reaches
you think i have very little chance at them
are you sayin gi can't get into those reaches?

and really the comment you made about the sum of 4 unlikelys resulting in one or two acceptances is really what i'm looking for, i figured i'll get into at least 1 reach and thats all i need

so basically your saying i could get surprised iwth one of thoe very little chances, and i may get into like 1 of my reach schools, and you wouldn't be surprised if i got into emory and nyu?
