I took two high-school credit classes in middle school and got B's in both of them. They are weighing down my GPA right now, but I was wondering how much colleges will care about this in the overall scheme of things. Do they even look at classes taken in middle school or do they re-calculate your GPA?

I doubt they would care, it was so long ago. If anything, your improvement shows academic maturity, and the fact that you took high school classes in middle school shows you are bold and committed to academics (in my opinion). Don’t worry about the nitty-gritty things like GPA that look good in the stat book; colleges are much more interested in seeing the grades you got in difficult classes-- not just some number calculated from your grades, which could be from the easiest course load possible.

A lot of students in my high school take high school classes in middle school with grades that are counted towards your final GPA. In fact, everyone who wants to take a foreign language has to do that. Same if you plan on taking AP math classes in your senior year. I’m sure this can in some cases demonstrate academic maturity, for not always.

I have no idea how colleges look at relatively low middle school grades that counts towards high school GPA, but I’m sure it’s nice to have an upward trend, and your later year grades are more important than the very early ones.

It is the same thing with non-weighted courses like health and P.E. that bring down your weighted GPA.

I’d explain it in your application, but it shouldn’t matter too much. I explained that my 2 B’s occurred after my parent’s broke up and I moved. The first semester I had an hour + commute . So I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Considering some schools aren’t even really interested in freshman year grades, I doubt they will put much weight on classes you took in middle school
