Im currently a junior in high school. I took calculus AB last year however am not taking BC this year. In fact, I am not taking any math class.

I will still be taking Calculus BC but online/a community college by the end of 2013, but dont think it will appear on the transcript. How much does this hurt in terms of chances to getting into an Ivy? I already have 3 years of math; I took two math classes sophomore year?

Take BC next year at your high school, and Ap stats if offered. If you got A (not A-s) in those classes, I think you will be fine, I had a friend who was a beast at math (ranked statewide) and stopped at BC sophmore year without taking stats, and still got into Uchicago, MIT and Caltech.

There are plenty of people at Penn who haven’t even taken calc and/or BC…you’ll be fine. I would try the community college thing and place out of math through placement test if you are unable to take the AP test to get credit.

I was in a similar situation to yours. I took AP calc AB my sophomore year, and my school doesn’t offer BC. I ended up going on with calculus at my local university, though a community college would work as well. I just took up through calc iii, and it worked out well enough.

I don’t think any college is going to disqualify you if you have taken all the math your school offers. But I think it would be a big plus for you with elite colleges – even if you are really more of a humanities person – if you were able to show you had gone above and beyond to keep learning in math even after you exhausted what your school offered. If you are NOT a humanities person, not doing something systematic to pursue math for two years would raise a lot of questions.
