I am thinking of having my 17 yo homeschooled student take the GED exam in Vermont this summer and fall before the exam changes are implemented in 2014.

We live in NYC. His 17th birthday is in July so he is still of compulsory age here until next June 30 and can't take the test in NYS. Vermont does not have a residency requirement and he only has to be 16 with parental consent.

He may be attending a CUNY school and would either need a GED or a letter of "substantial equivalence" from the homeschooling office for enrollment. I am aware that other schools may not require either. He would probably be applying with the letter, but given the future uncertainty I would like him to have the GED in case it is needed. In 2 years the homeschool office may not even issue letters.

He needs to complete 2 more years of science and math and would complete those courses after obtaining his GED, but he would also have the option to change his mind and go straight to community college.

I have seen documentation that says that students in NYC have the right to attend high school after passing the GED until age 21. Has anyone continued with high school courses after passing the GED? Would colleges count him as a graduate in 2013 and not consider any subsequent coursework?

Thank you!
