Intro and NY diploma requirement

Hi, just wanted to post a big hello-- this is my first post here.

We're finishing our 8th year of hsing, my oldest (of 3) is finishing his sophomore year, and we are starting to get serious about college searching.
My oldest is very interested in NYU Tisch for filmmaking. I remember hearing that NY schools have funky requirements for homeschoolers to either provide an official diploma or a GED. Here in Illinois we are considered a private school, so I will be issuing the diploma. I have searched the threads here regarding this, most of them seem several years old, with the advice to just create a diploma for him once he graduates. Is it really that simple? Does anyone here have any experience with this?

My plan for the next couple weeks is to contact NYU, and all the other schools he is interested in, to ask them directly their requirements for homeschoolers. I just wanted to do a little reconnaissance before I call them.

Thanks so much!

Hello from a NY homeschooler!

Each school has unique requirements. Some schools are more stringent (require the GED), while others require an official notation of completion from the local school district. I would scour NYU’s website for information and begin a dialogue with an admissions counselor if you have questions.

As far as a diploma, I would check out HSLDA’s (Homeschooling Legal Defense Association) FAQ on the subject: [HSLDA | Homeschooling Thru High School : High School Diploma](http://www.hslda.org/highschool/diploma.asp). It’s really informative.

Thanks so much! The HSLDA site was helpful.
